Location: 131 Steuart St Ste 400 San Francisco CA 94105 USA

Mission: The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area is devoted to advancing the rights of people of color, poor people, and immigrants and refugees. While maintaining this focus on civil rights, the Committee continues its historical commitment to serve as a leading advocate for African-Americans. Through legal clinics, impact litigation, and other projects, the Lawyers' Committee has worked with the private bar for thirty two years. The Committee's current work covers employment discrimination, welfare advocacy, voting rights, housing and educational access, minority and women-owned business enterprises, immigrant and refugee rights, and the promotion and defense of affirmative action programs.
Programs: Legal Services Clinic: Low income clients seeking a defense in a civil matter are matched with pro bono counsel.

Asylum Program: Since 1985, program has recruited pro bono attorneys to represent indigent refugees with meritorious political asylum cases.

Legal Services for Entrepreneurs: Offers legal assistance to low income individuals seeking to start or expand a for profit business in a distressed neighborhood.

Bayview Parents' Project: Because children of color from the Bayview in San Francisco are subject to school discipline with disproportionate frequency, this project links parents with pro bono attorneys to inform families of their rights.

College Readiness: Brings young attorneys of color into Oakland high schools to inform students of the requirements for and the importance of a college education.

Educating for Justice: Offers Oakland students a week long class about civil rights, taught by volunteer attorneys and covering issues like affirmative action, youth tried as adults, and welfare reform.

I served as a volunteer interpreter for their Political Asylum Program and was very impressed with the level of organization and service the LCCR provides. I worked on many different cases and every time the dedication of all staff involved, including the pro bono attorneys, was amazing!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

their Political Asylum Program.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

find a way to expand services to make them accessible to more people. Often they have more cases than they can take on.
