I co-founded the Law Project for Psychiatric Rights (PsychRights) to address the complete failure of the legal system in the United States to protect the rights of people to decline to take counterproductive, harmful, psychiatric drugs, especially the neuroleptics (misbranded as "antipsychotics") such as Seroquel, Zyprexa, Risperdal, Abilify and Haldol.

Based in Alaska where I am able to bring litigation, PsychRights has had a significant impact. It has also helped people in other states, but not having any lawyers available to bring suits in other states has hampered these efforts.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

winning 4 Alaska Supreme Court cases expanding the rights of people diagnosed with mental illness to decline psychiatric drugs or be locked up because of a psychiatric diagnosis.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

like to have enough money to hire attorneys to (1) challenge certain Food and Drug Administration (FDA) neuroleptic drug approvals, starting with the approval of Risperdal for use on children, which was procured by fraud, and (2) pursue strategic litigation outside of Alaska.

How did you learn about this organization?

I was a co-founder.

What is this organization's top short-term priority?

PsychRights' current focus is to put the brakes on the massive, tremendously harmful psychiatric drugging of children and youth. Currently that involves recruiting people around the country to bring Medicaid Fraud cases. See, http://psychrights.org/Education/ModelQuiTam/ModelQuiTam.htm

What is its top priority in the long run?

Help reform the public mental health system to end coercion and provide truly helpful approaches that will normally not involve drugs or electroshock, such as the Soteria and Open Dialog models .
