Kramden is a wonderful place to make a difference and there is a place for everyone who wants to help! Kramden is a program that provides students (and their families) with a computer refurbished by volunteers. It is a program that enables teachers to nominate hard working students who don't have a computer. I like that each week there is a place that I can come to fix, recycle, clean or teach others how help. It is a place run by thoughtful, intelligent, hardworking volunteers. I like that we have a good time yet have serious work to do and do it! I like that volunteers can make suggestions and they are heard! I think this is a great place to volunteer and feel appreciated.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing it's growth from giving a few computers to one school to seeing hundreds of computers be given throughout North Carolina. I love working with teachers who are excited about what we do to help their students. My favorite event is when we go to Ft. Bragg to give computers to students who have a parent serving overseas.

From the first time I spent time at Kramden, I realized that they were performing a rewarding function. To be able to supply children and military families with something they might not be able to afford, a computer, was terrific. As the time passed and the numbers grew, it was easy to realize the impact they were having as they expanded their deliveries to more and more families.

To see the product of my work and knowing that it was given to a deserving person was reward enough. But to read the thank you notes on our bulletin board, made me even more proud of my small contribution.

Nothing...everything is well organized and managed.

Recently I heard about an opportunity at my work to refurbish computers at Kramden; even though I am not in IT like everyone else who was going I decided to go because I thought that Kramden had a really great and unique mission statement. I had the best time, the atmosphere at Kramden is one of knowing you are doing a good deed as well as pure fun. Its a great chance to bond with co-workers and its very neat to know that the computers you work on will be given to students. I have been back to Kramden twice on Wednesdays and will definitely keep coming back.

I have volunteered on a couple of Geek-a-Thons organized by Kramden and was amazed by the motivation and enthusiasm of everyone involved with this organization. Computers and Internet are an indispensable part of life today and Kramden helps level the playing field for all hard working kids by providing them with refurbished computers.

Going into my senior year of High School, I'd used the library and other peoples computers for my research, typing, among other projects that required computer usage. This was getting to be more of a hassle for me and the people who I would ask to use their computer because it took away from their time from their schedule to get me and let me use their computer. When I got to Northern High School in Durham NC, a teacher mentioned Kramden Institute and said that I could get a computer of my own, the only requirements were not to have one. I'd never owned one nor had my family for several years. That October morning when I received my computer, immediately, I found where I was benefiting from it. No more hassles to getting my work done, no more begging people to use their stuff and on top of all that, my sisters are benefiting from it as well. They use it frequently for their school work. Kramden has been so much of a blessing to me personally, and now, from time to time, I go there and volunteer some time to help other underprivileged students get a computer because I've been where they are. Thank you Kramden.

I have worked at Kramden multiple times over the last few years. Growing up and going to public schools has really opened my eyes to the hardships that some students have to go through. Kramden is able to ease the burden of many students and provide them with computers that under normal circumstances they might not have.

My children attend an inner-city school in downtown Raleigh. They were shocked to learn that some children can't do homework because they don't have a computer at home.

The folks at Kramden are working hard to close the "digital divide" and make sure that no hardworking child gets left
behind just because their family can't afford a computer.

Kramden has volunteer opportunities for both geeks and non-geeks. My family refurbished computers to award to underprivileged students and we have participated in Award Days when the students come to pick up their computers. It is so incredibly touching to see how excited these kids are to get their "new" computers.

Kudos to Kramden for helping the kids!

I have been volunteering since November 2009. I love this place. The hardest part of volunteering is leaving at 9:00. I love the people that work there and the work environment is wonderful

Kramden's role in the educational community cannot be stressed enough. Without Kramden and all the volunteers and donors, needy children would not have the opportunity to be on the same level playing field as other students who have computers. Kramden has provided the opportunity to help bridge the digital divide to so many deserving young students and families who would otherwise not be able to afford a computer in the home. Without a computer in the home, need-based children fall even further behind their school peers.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

working through my old company to get them to donate their older working computers to Kramden so Kramden could refurbish them and then put them back out into the community for children who need them the most.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Seek additional funding opportunities.

This is a great organization and wonderful cause. As somebody who runs a technology-based company, I have always felt that technology (along with education) is prerequisite to any opportunity.
Kramden does a fantastic job with a truly admirable goal. Wonderful environment, dedicated staff
and volunteers, highly efficient. But the best reward for all is being able to provide such a critical instrument to those who would otherwise go without, often presenting a lifelong obstacle.
I've worked with a number of groups, but this is clearly one of the best, most productive, and most efficient.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing how it makes a difference to individuals, and lots of them; to seeing how efficiently a nonprofit can run; to seeing the satisfication and enjoyment of staff, volunteers, and recipients.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Make it much bigger. It's a model for how groups, especially non-profits, should operate.
