The Knights of Heroes Foundation is an amazing organization! They go out of their way to make sure the children of our fallen military are cared for and not forgotten. Knights of Heroes is a week-long camp that my three children look forward to all year. My children have strong bonds with both the mentors and fellow campers. The mentors are such wonderful examples for the children to follow and aspire to be like as they grow. We feel extremely blessed to be a part of this outstanding group!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

change nothing! It is fantastic.

The Knights of Heroes Foundation is a wonderful organization. My two sons, Alex and Noah, attended the camp in Colorado. They had such a memorable time. The boys met other boys who also lost a father in the military. It was a great bonding experience for them. The mentors were fabulous and always supported the boys with positive words. I love the theme of the Knights of Heroes to "rise up" above the negative things of this world. The boys were encouraged to try to always do the right thing and be the best person they can be. They had tons of physical challenges during the camp, which both Alex and Noah enjoyed. The Knights of Heroes even made the week exciting for the moms and daughters with special activities each day. Overall, it was an extremely special week we will never forget.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my boys. They had such a wonderful time at the Knights of Heroes camp. They came away from the experience being more confident in their abilities to try new things.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

not be able to do as well as the hard working folks who currently run it.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing the joy and happiness on my boys faces.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

top notch. Every person involved with the Knights of Heroes camp that we met were extremely supportive and kind.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

serve more boys.

Ways to make it better...

There is nothing that I would wish to improve upon.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding and manpower.

One thing I'd also say is that...

the mentors at the Knights of Heroes camp were so amazing. They selflessly gave of their time and talents. We appreciate their efforts!

I have been involved with Knights of Heroes since the first year. It has grown from 17 boys to 79 boys and girls. It is sad to have a need for such a camp but a blessing for Steve Harrold to offer it for these brave kids. They have been through more than any child should and to be able to spend a week laughing, sharing and making new friends with kids who share the same loss as them is priceless.

I have been a volunteer working with the Knights of Heroes (KOH) for the six years. The KOH experience has been as rewarding to me as it is to the young men attending. I have witnessed the positive impact that attending the annual KOH camp has had upon them. This year I had the opportunity to witness young men, who had attended the KOH camps as boys, return as mentors to work with the new boys attending the camp to the first time. Their positve impact was obvious. The new boys saw, first hand, what they will one day become even though their hero fathers will not be the ones to guide them. They know that their KOH mentors will do all they can to help fill that void and that their mentors will be there for them anytime they are needed.

KOH is simply the most effective program of it's kind. I became involved with KOH following the death of one of my closest friends. His children were 2 of the original children to attend at the founding of the camp. Since then, the camp has evolved into a program whose impact far exceeds the expectations for something with such a short duration. The program progression for the children keeps things relevant, exciting, and impactful as they continue to attend through their high school years. The proof of this is when they return after graduation to become mentors themselves. The 360 degree approach between mothers, brothers, and sisters puts the entire family on the same page when referring to tools taught and an effective means of implementation. As a mentor, I wait all year to live this week with these amazing kids. To witness, and get to take a small part, in their development as young men and future leaders can never be overstated.

Another amazing year in the backcountry! It's amazing how quickly the boys grow up. I am complete awe of how they adapt, overcome, and use that strength for incredible success. I am honored to be a part of the program, and honored to spend time with such great kids. Congratulations to our graduates! Can't wait to see ya'll next year as mentors!

In 2006 one of my closest friends was killed by an IED in Iraq leaving 3 young boys to navigate this life without him. The following year they were some of the first surviving children to attend the KOH camp. KOH is a truly unique grass roots foundation in that it has stayed true to it's mission, even if that meant turning away large donors that would have made KOH's growth much easier. A large portion of the fundraising is done by the Mentors and Families that are part of the KOH family. The values, and lessons that are learned by the children serve as guiding lights in this chaotic world. The expeiences these children are not only life changing for them, but for the mentors as well that take part in this journey.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the interactions with the children that attend. The impact this camp has is astounding as you watch the kids grow and return year after year. No other organization in this space has near the legitimate impact that KOH does.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Add more kids - but this will come in time. I wouldn't change a thing.

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

There is no better volunteer experience. It is absolutely life changing for everyone involved. The strength of the kids is inspiring on a level that cannot be described. The hearts and motivations of the other mentors is a truly unique experience.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

There is no way to not be effected by the experience that KOH offers.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

That there are bigger things in life to be concerned with in spite of a troubled economy. It reminds you to live life, and that living life really means living life for others.

I found this charity by accident. After reading the mission statement I was hooked. As a retired military member unfortunately this issue hits too close to home.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Find a way to schedule more camp weeks and buy propert for KoH.

I found Knights of Heroes on a suggestion of one of the Gold Star Families that attends the camp. Knights of Heroes (KoH) is one of the most incredible organizations I have found. KoH gives these children an opportunity to feel normal for a week, and be mentored by people that are equipped uniquely to deal with the grief and anger that comes up with traumatic loss. Most of the mentors are associated with the military in some way; many of us are either Active Duty or Prior Service, the vast remainder are spouses or have supported in some way the Military. The children that attend KoH are pushed outside of their comfort zones just enough to build their character and help them find self confidence. The difference we see in the kids over the course of just one week is really remarkable. I have seen a child go from a very timid wallflower who never smiled to a beaming and talkative child just over the course of a week. Even the child's mother was very (pleasantly) shocked to get her child back and see the difference!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I cannot think of anything that would make this organization better except perhaps encouraging more donations so the camp can support more children.

I help work with the moms' program! The program is set up for the new moms to come and enjoy a week in Colorado with other surviving spouses. The first and second years the moms are in the program they get to enjoy river rafting, climbing, horseback riding, and dinners out with other women in their same situation. If they have other children too young to go to the Knights of Heroes camp, then those little ones stay back with their moms and participate in the fun activities.

In their third year, we ask the moms to volunteer and give back to the new firs and second year moms. We assign each 3rd year mom to an activity to help organize and run. This lightens our load as long-term volunteers, as well as helps the 3rd year moms give back to the program.

I have been with Knights of Heroes for seven years and I love it...it's a wonderful organization that eases our loss and brings us closer to people in similar situations.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have it more than once per year!

Unlike other camps for children who have lost a parent, KOH goes beyond addressing grief. The program promotes long term resiliency, self efficacy, proactive thinking and leadership skills. I have three boys who have attended the camp following the loss of their Dad. The strong mentorship they receive has made a big difference in the young men they are becoming. Focusing on the future and the importance of character and integrity sets KOH apart from any other program!

My children have attended the Knights of Heroes camp for the past 6 years. After my husband was killed in action serving in Iraq, I was at a loss as to how to continue to raise our boys with integrity and character without the help and guidance of their dad. Knights of Heroes has provided amazing mentors in an adventure based program to do just that! The program has helped our boys heal, grow and has also helped them recognize their responsibility to the world around them. This program has changed my children's lives.

The boys and girls attending the KOH camps are challenged by the activities. They receive the encouragement of their mentors and the other campers to far exceed what they perceive to be their limitations. I personally watched several boys and girls who had never even held a firearm, I run the shotgun range, reluctantly take the shotgun in their hands and hit the target. Each time, the experience of succeeding at something they had never before attempted before brought a huge smile to their face and the desire to do it again. One young man enjoyed the experience so much that he returned to the range seven times. The same results occur throughout the week on the rock climbing cliff faces, obstacle courses, fishing and numerous other activities they have to experience, often times for the very first time. They gain self respectand pride in themselves. They develop new and lasting friendships and the sense that they are not alone and that people, their peers, their mentors and others they encounter truely do care about them.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

This year was my seventh year as a volunteer at the KOH camp. The experience is always personally rewarding and the knowledge that I am able to enable a boy or girl to participate in something new is gratifying. It is exhilarating to see the expressions of joy on ther faces when they accomplish something they were either afraid to try or didn't think they could do.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

...do nothing, it is great as is.

In September of 2008 my boys and I lost a very important member of our family, their dad and my husband. Every day, Every Month and Every Year comes with new and unique challenges. We are part of an ever growing population of people who have lost a parent/spouse due to our war on terror.

There are a number of opportunities and organizations that are there for my boys (13 and 14) with regards to their specific loss. Knights of Heroes is one of those organizations and they are the most impactful. They are there not just for the week that they attend their camp. They are mentors and friends for life. My boys have attended the Knights of Heroes camp for the past 5 years and they gain such respect by spending time with the male mentors. The respect that they would have shown to their dad on a daily basis if he was still here. The camp is composed of outdoor activities that they would only experience if their dad was able to be here or by them going to this camp. Roughing it in the outdoors for a week is not something most moms are willing or able to do. I am very greatful to Knights of Heroes for inviting my sons to attend their camp and for all of the emotional backing that they offer my boys, from both the mentors and their peers that are going through the same things. We love you!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Knights of Heroes is always evaluating and making changes from year to year. They are always welcome comments and criticism.

This was my first year. I could never have understood the true impacts of warfare on military families without having been part of this incredible program. Some of my one-on-one conversations during the week were more intense than I could have ever imagined - it is clearly evident these boys are dealing with traumatic and unexpected experiences that may take many years to get over. Our charge was not to replace their fathers but rather to challenge these kids, listen, and to exemplify strength of character. My family is dedicated to helping these children in their journeys to adulthood and becoming productive members of society.
