The Kids in Need Foundation provide much needed resources for students with disabilities. I am so thankful to them for providing focused lessons to supplement my curriculum. My school is a K-12 school serving approximately 520 students with mental and physical disabilities. The program is located on Staten Island at several sites. Within this program, we have numerous inclusion and work study sites located throughout Staten Island. Presently, we have 517 students: 12 students are English Language Learners, seven Asian/Pacific Islander, 115 Hispanic, three American Indian/Alaskan Native, 193 Black, 196 White, and one multiracial student are enrolled in our school.

Students are 98% free lunch certified, and travel to attend our special education school. Students are severely, emotionally disturbed and have been diagnosed with a full range of disabling conditions for example Autism, ADD, OCD, and General Anxiety. Students have cognitive disabilities, learning disabilities, and behavioral disorders that require special education supports to succeed including Special Education Teacher Support Services, speech and more.

My goal as the science teacher is to create learning opportunities that are fun and engaging while giving my students the opportunity to participate in citizen science. Thank you to Kids in Need for your assistance.

The Kids in Need Foundation has been an invaluable resource to me over the past few years. Through the Elmer's Teacher Toolkit grant, I have found a wealth of great project ideas, and the funds to actually undertake them in my K - 5 science lab. The foundation has allowed me to do some WOW projects with my students. Gaining student interest early on in the sciences is key to ignite a lifelong interest. My school is a Title 1 school, and my budget is zero, so any cool things I wish to undertake come out of my own pocket. I most recently received funding to undertake some vermicomposting activities. The squeals and fascination of students observing the worms, asking really insightful questions and getting hooked on science are what make my job rewarding.

What a fantastic experience this has been. Having written my first grant and being graciously awarded a Kids in Need Grant, I have since become adicted to applying for them. This particular grant has been very helpful for my students. Through reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, and working on their subsequent people watching project (due to the generous funds donated to us), they were able to see the world through different, less judgemental eyes. They learned that performing random acts of kindness really does make the world a better place. Many of my students still volunteer at local soup kitchens among other non-profit organizations and perform good deeds to this day, months after the unit has finished. Their compassion for others is permanently changed for the better. . . all thanks to you!

I was so excited to be a recipient for a grant. I was able to really shop around and get a lot of books and materials and even technology for my classroom. The students LOVED their projects (of writing children's stories) and the second graders who received the stories were even happier! Thank you so much for chosing my project to support. I am ever so thankful.

I teach at a very diverse school with an extensive demographic of students from near poverty to blue collar and some white collar neighborhoods. With the limited resources available in these stressful economic times, with school funding being the target of state cut-backs, the kids in need foundation grants have allowed me to bring in equipment and laboratory techniques that just would not have been possible any other way. This foundation has been nothing but professional and helpful in all aspects of their support. I thank them each and every time I use my electronic balances and other technical equipment to demonstrate Biological processes in my classrooms.

Increase the maximum grant monies to allow for purchasing equipment that can bring the most recent technology to the classroom.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to continue to teach students the structure of DNA through a fun keychain. It is something that I love to teach and the students really enjoy doing it as well. They are able to connect with a hands-on structure of something that is so small and be able to work with it on a daily basis. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to continue the project!

I found my experience to be very favorable. If you are someone who has not tried to write a grant before this is a great place to start. The process was very easy to understand. I really appreciated my grant and my sponcer for their help.

To help kids 'see' things that are abstract was something I have always enjoyed doing. My project involved middle grades students creating "The Perfect High School". This was to include making it highly energy efficient and green, along with high comfort levels and useful space needs. The plans my students came up with and the visions they had amazed me. We were not able to complete the project due to its size and time, but I believe they will always think about and use the ideas we presented and built into out model school. I thank this foundation was wise and innovative in seeing the importance of assisting me with the costs for this project, and I hope to continue and complete it next school year.

My experience with Kids In Need was nothing put positive! I am a high school math teacher in a small town that has barely any funding for anything extra. I wanted to do a Geometry project with my students but did not know how to fund the materials needed. I stumbled across this grant, wrote my part, and received an email saying I got it! It was the easiest and most successful grant process ever! My students learned surface area and volume well because they were able to be hands on due to the Kids In Need Foundation.

I recently received a grant from Kids in Needs. The grant was very easy to apply for! The entire process was the easiest grant process I have ever completed. I was able to complete an amazing language arts project with my students. All the parents were so impressed with the books the students made and I know they will be forever a keepsake! Thank you Kids in Need!!!

I have written a grant each year which was chosen and funded by KIds in Need Foundation. This past year I wrote a grant asking for material to teach my students the alphabet using fun activities. Each letter of the alphabet was represented by a letter word to bring inside the classroom for the week. By conducting this for each letter of the alphabet my students were able to use personal experiences to connect to each letter. (Examples: Ant Farm (A), Bubble (B), Homemade Crayons (C) and so on.) Since our school along with educational funds everywhere are being cut, this grant was a wonderful gift. In our parish we are allowed an allotment of $100.00, however the rest of the year material comes out of my pocket. This opportunity has offered and fulfilled my request by helping me as a teacher and my students academics.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

grants awarded to me. I typed lessons to fulfill my students needs and kids in need granted me with material to obtain the memorable experiences I wanted to offer.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

not do anything.
