I am a retired forester with over 50 years of experience in the natural resources field. I became involved with the Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education (KACEE) shortly after it was organized over 40 years ago. KACEE was created as an association of diverse organizations dedicated to promotion of effective, science-based, non-biased environmental and conservation education throughout Kansas. Over my career, I have served as the head of the state forestry agency and the state wildlife and parks agency as well as two years on the Governor's staff. In these positions, I have been involved in a range of controversial natural resource issues. Throughout the time I held these positions, I continued to be actively involved with KACEE, because I recognized that long-term solutions to our environmental problems were dependent upon an educated citizenry who could weigh various sides of complex environmental issues and make and support informed, balanced decisions. KACEE's programs with training in hands-on problem solving and critical thinking skills seemed the approach that was needed. KACEE is somewhat unique in that it started as an association of organizations rather than individuals and its membership has grown to over 200 agencies, non-profits, educational institutions at various levels, and business and industry. These organizations hold widely divergent views on environmental issues, but can agree that balanced, non-biased environmental education that presents various sides on the issues is where they can agree and support a common cause. For many years, KACEE was an all volunteer organization, but through its success, now has a small dedicated professional staff supported by a wide network of volunteers and partners. I have found my association with KACEE and its network of partners to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have seen many formal and non-formal educators who have integrated the hands-on critical thinking and problem solving approaches learned at KACEE workshops into their teaching techniques. I have learned valuable facilitating skills

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The opportunity to meet and work with dedicated environmental educators in a worthwhile cause has been extraordinarily rewarding to me. The KACEE broad-based network of partners has been truly outstanding and valuable to me.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The staff and volunteers I have worked with in KACEE are outstanding individuals who are dedicated and effective leaders and communicators.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It would release the true potential of KACEE to work with and support a diverse network of partners to strengthen environmental education.

I started working with KACEE over 8 years ago when I began my environmental education career. The KACEE staff and organizational members came alongside me and encouraged me to get involved and take on leadership roles. I have grown as an educator, a professional, an earth-conscience human through my KACEE experiences.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

creating a community of Water Festival coordinators that support and share with eachother to make environmental education fun, assessible, and highly regarded.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

generous, knowledgeable, creative, easy to work with, and lots of fun.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

create a high quality, comprehensive, interactive environmental education program that provides services to all Kansans.

I've been recycling for over 15 years. I work for the Kansas Forest Service and thru them have learned and promote the importance of planting trees to provide oxygen and cleaner air. I've been able to teach my grandchild, children and relatives the importance of recycling for the future of Mother Nature

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

learning different aspects of conservation. How to help promote conservation and recycling.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The effort KACEE membership puts towards the conservation and education to school groups. KACEE provides workshops for students, teachers, conservation districts, so they can learn how to promote conservation in their area of expertise.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

fantastic. Very friendly, knowledgeable and wanting to learn and get the most of out the conservation eduction for the protection of Kansas.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Really provide the needed workshops to training individuals; have more staff to cover the state, provide assistance to volunteers to help cover their expenses. Get more schools and individuals involved in conservation.

Ways to make it better...

My experience has been great. I've enjoyed learning and helping out KACEE for the past 20+ years

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Financial. Budget cuts have caused some of the reliable funding to be cut. KACEE needs sponsors to help support the financial aspects of promoting water needs, Project Learning Tree, Outdoor wildlife learning sites

One thing I'd also say is that...

KACEE promotes conservation and environmental education throughout the state of Kansas and they are becoming more known and requested. Funding is needed to help support the training KACEE provides.
