JOIN

Rating: 5 stars   12 reviews

Issues: Children & Youth, Job Training, Homeless & Housing, Human Services

Location: 1435 NE 81st Avenue Suite 100 Portland OR 97213 USA

Mission: JOIN exists to support the efforts of homeless individuals and families to transition off the streets and into permanent housing. We envision a community where homelessness, if it exists at all, is a short-term circumstance rather than a long-term or chronic condition.
Results: Since hiring our first Outreach Worker in 1998, JOIN has helped over 5,000 men, women, and children transition out of homelessness and into the safety of permanent housing.
Target demographics: JOIN works with individuals and families sleeping on the streets in the City of Portland without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, age, age, gender, family status, sexual orientation, disability, or diagnosis.
Direct beneficiaries per year: JOIN houses an average of 500 individuals each year from 250 households.
Programs: JOIN's Outreach Services Program is designed to address the systemic need for greater service accessibility and to re-engage homeless people in positive processes of change. It is founded upon the efforts of 6 outreach workers who visit campsites, meal sites, and other places that homeless people gather out on the street. They develop personal relationships, provide ongoing support, and engage homeless people in processes of positive personal change that lead to successful and sustainable transitions off the street. Basic services such as showers, laundry, and personal storage are provided at JOIN's facility within the context of a barter exchange system. This system promotes individual dignity by allowing participants to earn and select the service they need. Additional services include personal hygiene items, sleeping bags and blankets, contact address and telephone number, mail, bus tickets, and Oregon ID. Outreach services emphasize transitions out of homelessness and into permanent housing. Specifically this means helping to secure benefits or employment that will enable the payment of rent and supporting housing searches with funding for application fees and move-in deposits. We stay involved with people for at least 12 months and will provide limited funds for housing retention services for those people with whom we have been working.

Join is an incedible link to our homeless individuals in Portland. They stretch every dollar as far as it can go and it is amazing what they accomplish. Saying no isn't an option, they find a way. Wish more non-profits could be as productive as Join.

Join is an organization that does amazing things and continues to do amazing things at all hours of the night and day. Their objective is to end homelessness and they make every effort to help those who are homeless find subsidized housing and a new start to life. The staff at JOIN are there for every kind of person solving every possible problem that comes up. JOIN staff quickly become family and that is the definition of commitment. If there were more groups in this country like JOIN, things would be a little easier to handle.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that everyone rolls their sleeves up and works hard toward helping people. From the Executive Director down, everyone chips in and doesn't look at their title. Great place to work and great people to be around.

Ways to make it better...

if there were more volunteers to help out

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

One thing I'd also say is that...

JOIN partners with people experiencing homelessness and helps them rebuild a system of support to move forward on their journey of recovery. The staff do this through developing authentic relationships with the people they serve, their friends. The feeling of non-judgement, partnership, empathy, understanding, and support permeates the space at JOIN and spreads throughout its community. JOIN's approach is unique in Portland and their success is proof that peoples' lives can change when we create space for them to heal. It is the perfect vision of how I would like to see social services provided-- one where everyone is treated with dignity and respect for the simple fact that they are a human being.

I became aware of JOIN through Marc Jolin, the executive director. He invited me to take a look at their work. That was 3 years ago. I was then, and continue to be, in awe of the work that gets accomplished there. I think because the staff and board focuses on personal relationships rather than broad policy, they are able to effectively identify what will really help folks in the moment, and get them to that place. I have never worked with another organization that has as much spirit and dedication. I am currently on the Board Of Directors, and am also very impressed with the low overhead and the focus on getting resources to the folks they serve versus the organization itself.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have seen first hand how someone's life can be changed just by someone taking a chance on them and their success. I have heard many stories from folks that they have helped outlining how other organizations put barriers up, and how JOIN did not.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I always have fun when I interact with the staff. They have a great way of doing their jobs with humor and dedication.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Create and manage housing so that they could immediately offer permanent housing to folks, and not have to rely only on subsidized housing or private market landlords.
