Mission: J'Burgh is an initiative of the Hillel Jewish University Center of Pittsburgh with support from Shalom Pittsburgh and the Jewish Healthcare Foundation. It is designed to serve the needs of the approximately 2,500 Jewish graduate students and young professionals in their twenties living in Pittsburgh. Our mission is to bring together Jewish grad students, young professionals, and their friends to create opportunities for them to build a community together, celebrate their Judaism together, and network for professional opportunities and development. J'Burgh's goal is to provide a gateway for Pittsburgh's young Jewish adult population to explore and develop their personal Jewish identity within our city.
Results: It is estimated that there are 2,500 young Jewish adults between the ages of 21-29 years old, living in Pittsburgh. In our first full year of programming, we reached out to over 600 individual participants, and expect to have over 900 during the 2009-2010 academic year.

amazing organization! provides a variety of social, educational, and spiritual activities to the Jewish community of Pittsburgh. softball, kickball, jewish learning, weekend activities and much much more!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my personal life by being more passionate about how i go about my daily life

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

expand their staff to be able to provide even more to the community

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the social circle that it provides

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

caring, giving, honest, and very responsive.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

make a difference in the lives of as many people as possible

Ways to make it better...

they had even more funding

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

One thing I'd also say is that...

The Hillel JUC was a vital, influential lifeline both during my college career and after. J'Burgh was a fantastically run program; an essential player in my life as a transitioned from college to post-grad. The director was key in creating a cultural and social atmosphere, filling the program with engaging activities. From the bowling team to outings in Pittsburgh, J'Burgh truly created an adult social group, fulfilling my intellectual, spiritual and social needs

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Fabulous. Friendly. Capable. Supportive.

I participated with J'Burgh on various sports teams. In addition, I have used J'Burgh to connect with the Jewish community and engage my Judaism. Last week, I joined together with about 40 other grad students and young professionals to go to Yom Kippur services and then a breakfast. It's nice to have a family here.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

meeting and finding a way to express my Judaism.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

incredibly helpful and fun. Everyone just wants to have a good time that's Jewishly integrated.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Help create programing for more students and help propel Pittsburgh's young Jewish community.

J'Burgh does great things for the Pittsburgh Young Adult Jewish community by allowing us the flexibility to plan the type of events that our particular demographic needs and wants. The group draws in great people and makes the city more dynamic-- it also allows people to feel connected to other post-college Jewish 20-somethings and 30-somethings in town.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Meeting nice people, organizing dynamic events.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Friendly.

J'Burgh fills a tremendous need in Pittsburgh to provide programming for Jewish 20somethings. I have had nothing but positive experiences with J'Burgh and through my involvement I now feel that I have very strong connections within the entire Jewish community of Pittsburgh. From cultural event, Shabbat dinner, social events, like movie and poker nights, there is something for everyone. Encompassing both graduate students and young professionals, J'Burgh has allowed me to meet a great mix of people.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The inclusiveness and diversity of the members. With the number of people coming to J'Burgh events continuing to grow I am meeting new people all of the time. Each person bring a wonderful new dynamic to J'Burgh!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Amazing! David Katz has made J'Burgh a well known organization in Pittsburgh. His dedication and commitment inspires members to have active roles within J'Burgh. It says a lot about both J'Burgh and David that so many people keep coming back to events.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

become the ultimate model of how to create and run a successful organization that serves Jewish grad students and young professionals. The planning board could travel to other cities, preferably tropical, and share what we have learned through J'Burgh.

Ways to make it better...

I was able to have cheese on my burgers at J'Burgh events. Joking. I would like my friends in other cities to have something like J'Burgh so that I didn’t always feel like I was bragging when I talked about how great J’Burgh is.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Perpetuating the organization once current members either graduate and leave Pittsburgh or 'age out' of J'Burghs demographics. It will be important to continue attracting new members.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I heart J'Burgh

J'Burgh is an innovative program that provides Jewish young professionals, like myself, and grad students an instant opportunity to get involved in the Jewish community and to connect with peers. J'Burgh really does help to create and foster natural friendships through fantastic and diverse programming. Additionally, J'Burgh contributes to the strength of the Pittsburgh region because it makes it that much more attractive for Jewish twenty-somethings to come to and stay in the Pittsburgh area.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the ability to get involved in the Jewish community at a younger than average age and to make real friendships.

J'Burgh is a much needed and innovative program. It provides a Jewish social scene to young professionals and grad students in their 20's. Having participated in similar programs in other cities, I've come to realize that J'Burgh is special because it really has created a community, while most other programs for Jewish young professionals serve more exclusively as "meet markets" for singles and eventually become dominated by the 35-45 age group.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

David is friendly and outgoing, and in addition to putting all his energy into the organization, he takes a strategic approach.

J'Burgh has been a great way for me to get in touch with young professionals in Pittsburgh. I'm very glad I've found the organization - I've used it to attend dance performances, holiday events, movies, etc. I'm always impressed by how many people turn out and the quality events. Thank you very much!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Diverse and fun to meet.

J'burgh is at the crest of the wave of "next generation" Jewish organizations that are creating virtual communities for twenty-somethings. While the programs are currently modeled for Pittsburghers, there is every reason to believe that this model could be replicated across the country. One thing is for sure...if one wants to get a glimpse of what the American Jewish community may look like in 15-20 years, J'burgh is the place to take a sneak peak. Many of today's trends will become tomorrow's institutions.
