My husband and I went to a show at the Irish Repertory Theatre during our honeymoon, and it was a wonderful experience. The theatre is intimate, and the shows are of the highest quality. The next time we are in New York, we will be sure to see whatever is playing there. I've remained on their mailing list specifically to recommend upcoming shows to our friends. It's good to know such a place exists.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

An excellent show.

Not.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The intimate theatre experience.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Very polite and helpful.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the world. :)

Ways to make it better...

I lived in New York and could visit all the time.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The same as any theatre: money.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This is a very special theatre that should be cherished.

As a professional actor one of my most rewarding experiences has been as a member of the acting company at the Irish Rep. I have also attended many productions as an enthusiastic audience member and a financial contributor. On all levels I have been embraced warmly, welcomed as a member of the "family". All the productions have been superb with the recent EMPEROR JONES reaching extraordinary heights of brilliance, innovation, and imagination. Unforgettable!

I have been going for more than 20 years. In the beginning you needed to follow them around in make shift theater spaces. It was terrific when they got their permanent home as it was so much easier to regularly get to see them. I would guess that I have missed no more than 5 productions in that period of time. Consistently interesting plays with good to breathtaking performances. I can say that if I were to pick the top ten performances I have been to in a 40 year span of going to the theater in NY and London, at least one or two would have come from the Irish Rep.

We used to go to one or two performances every year at the Irish Rep and enjoyed them immensely, but since I became a wheelchair user, it has become too frustrating to continue. Their front door is inaccessible, they do not keep a ramp out, there is no easy way to contact them about putting it out even when they are called in advance about doing so, and the door saddle is a huge impediment. Wheelchair users sit right where actors jump on and off the stage and it is uncomfortable. Attempts to get the Irish Rep to do things differently have fallen on deaf ears so we no longer go and I do not want to donate anymore to an inaccessible theater when there are others that I could donate to.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

have them all use motorized wheelchairs for a week and see how they get around their building. Then, maybe they would "get" it. I would also have them all undergo disability sensitivity training with an expert.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the variety of plays they put on.

Ways to make it better...

they would take wheelchair accessibility seriously. Everyone else does. They will be known as the little theatre that didn't.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

not theatrical. They are disability access.

This theater is one of the best off Broadway experiences for thinking New Yorkers. We've seen two plays since learning of the theater in the past year or so and each time have marvelled at the productions. In both cases, they managed to transform a performance into an immersive experience replete with creative sets and transfixing actors. Most recently, The Emperor Jones, had sets that included puppets (we're not talking Elmo here) that were incredibly sophisticated and visually arresting. We only wish productions with many times their budget could be even a fourth as creative.

I have had the pleasure of working with the Irish Rep as an actor and have also attended many performances there. My experiences on both counts have been wonderful. The company is run by people with a strong awareness of community and a true love for what they do. There is always a great sense of family and fun coupled with a high level of professionalism and mutual respect towards colleagues and clientele. The Irish Rep's work reaches beyond its physical space in a most positive way.

My husband and I saw "The Emperor Jones" at the Irish Repertory Theatre Company in October of 2009. We are not New York residents, but we made a special pilgrimage to this production. John Douglas Thompson was amazing, and the whole production was brilliantly creative... great, great theater in a congenial setting!

The Irish Rep is such a wonderful place to see theatre. Certainly my favorite Off-Broadway venue, it's always so warm and welcoming to come to, a real family atmosphere, while the performances on stage combine the best in skilled storytelling and theatrical ambition. Whether it's taking chances on new material, such as in the recent "When I Was God," bravely bringing fresh life to classics, such as in their recent outstanding production of "The Emperor Jones," or just plain being the best place to see Irish drama done richly and truthfully, as in their recent moving "Aristocrats," the Irish Rep is unique, vital and leading the way for other theatres to follow. I know I never miss a show there.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Their producing deep, earthy, thought-provoking drama, that a wide audience can appreciate.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Get to work there more often!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Their wonderful, ever-welcoming, positive family atmosphere.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Always utterly helpful, greatly generous, highly knowledgable and professional, and always good-humoured.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Produce more and more ambitious projects, with larger casts, and further develop its 2ndry space into a black box for developing even more new material, concurrent with the bigger shows.

Ways to make it better...

More theatres in NY were this warm and welcoming.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Maintaining their high standards and keeping audiences challenged and involved when surrounded by so much junk-entertainment.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Charlotte and Ciaran, who run the Rep, are mavericks and brilliant, do amazing things with small resources, and don't get half the kudos they deserve.
