In the global struggle for human rights, the fight for women's autonomy and rights as equals are often given short shrift. IWDC gives women in a voice in politics and government and makes them visible, empowered participants in patriarchal societies. IWDC gives women the power to change their destinies, the lives of their families, and to play important roles in politics, economics, education, etc. The organization does a superb job of informing the public of the plight of women and in getting things done. They make things happen quickly and create lasting change that has a rippling effect in the communities and countries they serve.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Beads for Education has made a big difference in Kenya with the women of the Masaai tribe. Making and selling their own beads gives the women financial power to decide how to spend money and change the future of their families.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Find them more money and staff so that they can do more to help women and girls.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Their dynamic founder and Executive Director Barbara Ferris. She is an inspiration and positive influence.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Helpful and professional.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the world.

Ways to make it better...

I had the time to do more for IWDC myself. The more I see and learn about their work the more I want to be a part of all their programs.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The same facing most nonprofits, especially those that serve women--lack of money, staff, and capacity.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Please give them your support.

Although there are many deserving organizations that compete for time & money, I find it easy to respond to emergency needs, while ignoring the systemic problems of societies that undervalue women. The IWDC focuses on the heart of the matter. When women are trained to be politically active at the grassroots level, their influence "trickles up", and permeates the whole society. I will always attempt to respond to urgent needs for food, shelter & medical supplies, but one of my "five guineas" will be spent at the heart of the problem, with an organization that works to change power structures and attitudes.

I continue to be impressed with the training and opportunities this organization provides for young women to develop effective political and community leadership skills. Through programs such as CAMP, which promotes peace through training women from strife-ridden areas in public policy and advocacy skills, and the Pipeline Project, which trains young women in how to effectively shape public policy debate in politics and their communities, IWDC is empowering women to address the challenging issues of our day in a meaningful way.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Working with the women who participate in the CAMP program. Hearing how they applied the skills and experiences they gained through CAMP to effect positive changes in their own communities inspired me and helped me to effect change in my own community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

well-educated and informed about women's issues internationally and dedicated to making women's voices heard in order to shape public policy in a positive way for all members of society.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Offer the CAMP program to women in war-torn areas on a long-term basis instead of only once a year and only as funding permits. Also, it could offer Pipeline in all the cities that have expressed interest in having such a program.
