From the time of deployment to Haiti to my return to California, International Medical Corps was always on top of things. Their logistics , security, media staff were amazing. Being a part of IMC as a medical volunteer during the initial releif phase at University Hospital in Haiti was a life changing experience. IMC took great care of their volunteers. Safety and well-being of their volunteers was first on their list. IMC knew exactly the plan of action it took for disaster relief. I was introduced to International Medical Corps' work during an internship and was immediately struck by their motto, "from relief to self-reliance". Humanitarian work goes beyond band-aid solutions and I was impressed by International Medical Corps' long-standing commitment to not only medical support but training programs, working themselves out of a job. Now, as a college student I did not have the medical training or field experience to offer any skills in their efforts in disaster zones or refugee camps, but the communications department had some space for volunteers and so I started volunteering in their Santa Monica headquarters. I sat down at a desk about 2 weeks before the 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti. As the emergency response team mobilized, the HQ teams put in extra hours and energy to make sure logistics and operations ran as smoothly as possible and they still found the time and patience to train new volunteers such as myself on various tasks and were always available to answer questions. Also, volunteers were encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion on what actions were taken in Haiti. International Medical Corps does great work not only in the field but also in the home office.
