I had a blast meeting the participants of the program, sleeping over twice and cooking a great meal with wonderful volunteers. Thanks to all who make this wonderful organization possible!

My involvement with IRWS has been nothing sort than inspirational and eye-opening. I am incredibly grateful to have volunteered with IRWS for more than a year now, and I was so impressed by the shelter that I have become increasingly more involved. Now, after assisting the board and really getting to know our guests, I've been inspired to include the homeless and other low-income individuals in mind as I pursue a human rights/ public policy law degree. Because of my experiences with IRWS, I have decided to dedicate more of my life to helping those without homes, and to all the kindhearted people of IRWS I am eternally grateful.

I am very busy yet I find time to volunteer as I firmly believe that IRWS certainly makes a difference in the lives of our community's homeless. Any evening is an experience in friendship, tasty homecooked culinary treats and gifting of ourselves, our time and effort. What goes around, comes around.

Open, warm, interested, willing to help minimize, even if only temporarily, the challenges of homelessness of providing basic food and shelter

Build a facility and estabilsh a program for our community's homeless that would allow for guests basic stability to establish themselves back into the mainstream of society and work force.

This is a wonderful shelter. I wasn't sure what to expect. I haven't worked with the homeless before and was a little nervous. But I quickly found myself laughing and having a great time. The homeless clients were wonderful.

Most recent - stayed overnight. I was truly impressed with the organization of the evening, including two giant notebooks that seemed to have every possible contingency accounted for with instructions on what to do. Organizers are extremely helpful, guests know the drill and respect the volunteers and the facility. A wonderful way of taking care of "the least of these."

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

how those living homeless respect the church and seek to live in partnership.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Organization and training. Internships for grad students - what a great idea! (I'm not a student, but think that's really cool).

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It doesn't need that, but it would be nice if they had a paid staff member instead of relying on one church's pastor to do so much.

What a great program. I volunteered this year and was most excited by the openness of the volunteers. I gained a whole new perspective on the homeless community. One of the best programs in Davis... especially as they operate on such a small budget.

I think this program is a blessing. I'm glad the IRWS is in our community. It's a great service opportunity, so I am very grateful for that.

It's a great opportunity to do service in the community. The level of organization makes it easy to participate. Our guest seem very grateful for the service and I'm glad to have a chance to help these folks out because they all deserve the help

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Other folks I've volunteered with were very friendly and the program seems to be nicely organized. The interns are awesome and seem to be very compassionate.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

take a serious shot at eliminating homelessness in the Davis/Sacramento area

This is a wonderful organization full of large and kind hearts. I hope it is given freedom to let all that generosity touch as many folk as possible each night it is in operation.

I enjoyed volunteering at this rotating shelter. The rotation is coordinated among many congregations, and there are a few very devoted people that keep us all organized. I am amazed. The outreach is great, it seems, because the shelter is utilized by a diverse group of people from all walks of life who find themselves homeless at this time. I think the student interns play a key role in keeping this working, and they impress me with their responsibility and real devotion. This is the first time our congregation has been involved and I am proud that I got to be a part of it.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Serving dinner and meeting the other volunteers.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Responsible, devoted, exhausted and overworked. They did not push their religious preferences and instead exemplified what lots of windbag preachers recommend that we aspire to be

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build a non-moving shelter! There is a lot of labor involved in transport of equipment that could instead be utilized in more fulfilling ways

Ways to make it better...

My rabbi had made an appearance

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Support and understanding from all the religious communities involved, legal advice for concerns about safety and liability issues so that everyone understands the (small and worthwhile) risks involved in hosting the shelter.

I volunteered there last night. The tone was lovely, the staff were inspiring, and I especially appreciated how people of all faiths (or no faith) were all welcomed -- no one was preached to and everyone was fed and got to sleep there no string attached. I was sad to read in the local paper that some people in our town aren't enthusiastic about this service, as I think is is both essential, and well planned and implemented.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

inspiring. Especially Bill Habicht. He embodies generosity of spirit, supporting the homeless in an open respectful way, donating time, expertise and food, and sharing his family with the homeless, while still working and volunteering in other contexts.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build houses for the homeless, as it already works hard to do this for low income folks. AS it is, it runs well on a tight budget, but just imagine those folks all having a safe place to sleep with rooms of their own...

Ways to make it better...

more people knew about it and volunteered to help out too. I think that a few people do the lion's share of the volunteering and appear very tired. With more volunteers, the tasks could be spread out more.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The city council. I appreciate that they changed their minds about the rule limiting the shelter to 25 people, after someone was turned away on the coldest night of the year... This said, I do think they could be more supportive.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This is a worthwhile experience.
