INFORM is a non-profit environmental organization established in 1973 dedicated to educating the public about the effects of human activity on the environment and on public health. INFORM is building on its distinguished research legacy by using visual media to broaden the audience to include the general public. Our objective is to expand environmental literacy and provide concerned citizens with the tools they need to implement meaningful changes in their daily lives at a time when the need for change has never been so urgent.

The Secret Life series is a great idea, as is the idea that INFORM position itself as a mouthpiece for environmental issues. Of course there are many orgs working on environmental issues. It makes sense to me to have one focus on communications in particular as this is an area where non-profits frequently have trouble. In pursuing this goal, INFORM has done a good job of working with other orgs in the realm, another good thing. INFORM shows steady progress with its messaging.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the videos I worked on. These did well on the fest circuit so it's clear to me that INFORM is not content, as many orgs are, to simply finish a video and do little to get it out there. INFORM is working to live up to its name.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Hire someone full time with solid contacts in television and experience with web promotion. Have one person only to oversee the actual production and to maintain this part of the vision.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
The basic ideas and research that went into the videos were solid. The videos themselves are simple and list concrete actions consumers can take to be more environmentally responsible.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
was energetic and enthused about the project at hand. Volunteers did a lot of the research and it was well done.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Create a tv series that would also be available on the web. The Secret Life series would be invaluable to consumers looking to understand the environmental impact of their purchases on a product by product basis. Simple and clear.
Ways to make it better...
The creative process were streamlined, with fewer cooks in the mix. The integration of messaging across different media has to be better coordinated. A higher concept less documentary approach would improve the videos, conveying more info via the web.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
They have to make work that goes on television, goes viral on the web, or both. For this, they will have to raise money for production, hire a solid production team, and create work that is solid and consistent.
One thing I'd also say is that...
INFORM is on the right track. The econ crunch has hurt. I'd hope other environmental orgs would see fit to partner with them to create communications that will reach a wide audience and convey these essential messages.
