Corporate Accountability International (CAI) does magnificent work to protect ordinary folks in less developed countries from getting crushed under global corporate steamrollers, and by their often unhelpful alliances with the powerful and the corruptible. It works to establish a principled transparent approach to development that respects social justice for all, and it works in a very practical way. First it researches and informs, then it organizes key stakeholders and decision-makers to effectively address the issues, and sets up mechanisms to hold them accountable. For example, it has made huge strides protecting countries against the intention of global tobacco companies to shift their unhealthy marketing to poorer countries. They argue their rights to unbridled free enterprise should not be infringed just because their marketing deceives and eventually kills millions of their customers. CAI is now taking on the issue of privatization of water, where corporations conspire with the World Bank to take the best freely available water where the poor live, and sell it back to them only if they can afford it.
