This is my first year volunteering with In2books. My epal Logan is in the fourth grade and we have already read two books. He is so enthusiastic about reading in his letters and he share somethings about himself as well. I look forward to letters from him. I came across this volunteer opportunity on volunteermatch.org. It looked like a easy and fun way to help a child improve their reading comprehension. I have been able to find the books required at the library, at Barnes and Nobles for cheap or on Amazon.com. I have really enjoyed volunteering with In2books. I feel good knowing I'm helping a child. The In2books website is easy to navigate. You can even find sample letters. You are able to contact the child's teacher if you have any questions.

This is my first year with In2Books. My epal Gwen is in 4th grade and we've read fiction "The Naked Mole-Rat" and social studies "Sacajawea". Our teacher is right on top of the program and keeps me well informed about the classroom. It's exciting to receive Gwen's letters, as she's open and enthusiastic about the books, and she shares a few things about herself with me.
The staff at In2Books makes it easy to sign up and has extensive suggestions on how to write the best letters possible. I love books and children, so this program fits me to a 'T'.

Receiving a letter from my student is the highlight of my day. It also gives me great satisfaction to write letters to her that are examples of proper correspondence (no spelling shortcuts). Writing is an important part of education and this program helps them perfect that skill.

I sometimes wish I could send gifts to the teacher, related to the current book, but realize this is not really feasible. It's enough to do the job asked by the organization and do it well.

This is my fist year as a eMentor literacy volunteer and I just love it. I came across this volunteer opportunity through online AARP and thought I can easily do this, sounds like fun and I can help a child get the literacy foundation they need. Without reading and comprehensive skills learned early on, a child will most certainly find difficulty in the school years to follow. In2Books (ePals Fdn) offers an excellent program that both benefits a child but the pen pal at the other end. Two of the three books required for reading so far, I've gotten at the library, the other with a coupon from Borders. My life has been enriched so much by this opportunity to interact in such a positive way in a child's life. The online In2Books program is so easy to navigate and all questions are answered under one of the many subject tabs provided. It's a very rewarding experience for both student and pen pal.

A few years ago, my husband had a kidney transplant and we moved from our home to a new city and state so that he could get the care he needed. I was going a little nuts being housebound with him, and I needed a place to use my energy and expertise as a librarian. However, I needed to do this work from home. In2Books came into my life as a result of a mention in a women's magazine. I've been volunteering ever since. The kids are great and the teachers are dedicated to the program. I have a wonderful time doing what I do best: communicating with kids about books. So, not only did I help these kids and teachers, but they helped me keep my sanity at a very rough time in my life. Thanks In2Books.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

3 years of corresponding with kids about their books

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

There was one year when the teacher was not organized and the whole program fell by the wayside. Perhaps the screening process should be more rigorous to make sure that teachers are committed.

Rewarding, engaging, fun and MEANINGFUL! I've been an In2Books pen pal for three years and every year I've loved exchanging letters with my student pen pal about great books! My pen pal, Austin, and I are currently reading a biography of Gandhi and discussing what it means to be a hero. It's got to be a well-designed, brilliant program when adults and children who otherwise have no connection begin to build relationships, write thoughtful letters and talk about changing the world! I plan to participate for years to come!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

As a pen pal, I get the satisfaction of knowing that I am helping a young child grow into a literate, thoughtful, well-read member of society. And, I get to learn from my student and be inspired as I see the world through the eyes of a fifth grader.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I cannot think of anything I'd change about In2Books. If only more adults and children could be lucky enough to participate!

This has been a wonderful experience for me during the past two years I have participated. The communication with the administrators is great. The interaction with the teachers is always current and informative and, best of all, the letters back and forth with my pen pal have been wonderful. I love to read, have a full time job and am otherwise very busy. This is a commitment I can keep - reading books, writing letters and encouraging the young readers to grow and stretch in their own reading and writing development.

I hope to continue with this program for many years into the future. I cannot imagine a more worthwhile endeavor than to continue encouraging children to read and offering mentoring in the bargain.

How fun is it to have a friend who is reading the same book and who can talk about it with you?

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My student last year - a boy - told me all about himself as well as answered questions about the book and came up with thought provoking questions on his own. This year's student, a girl, is every bit as engaged and even gives me encouragement by telling me I write really good letters and ask questions which make her think hard!

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would eliminate snow days - just kidding about that! This is a very well run organization, I am hard pressed to find any suggestions for change.

This is my second year as a volunteer reader / pen pal with In2Books. I love my work with my student each year and In2Books makes it VERY easy to communicate and build relationships with these young readers and their teachers.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

It is great witnessing the progress of the student throughout the year.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Make it possible to donate items to the teacher to use in class like bookmarks or items that follow the theme of the book.

Children are an important part of society; they are the future. Giving kids hope and guidance by teaching them the tools they will need to be successful in life is what In2Books does. They teach kids that there are role models out there that are interested in their educational goals and challenges. It also promotes literacy. Being a volunteer penpal for a child is very rewarding and keeps you actively involved in the organization's work.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

helping out my own nieces and nephews with their reading and writing skills and knowing how much of a difference that type of attention to their studies can benefit their learning.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

fix the enrollment stage where it requires you to put in vital information, such as your social security number online. although i see the need for such information (to do background checks), i think it discourages more people from volunteering.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the involvement of getting the book, reading their letters, writing back, everything.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

online only.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

function as an after school program to keep kids off the streets and learning instead.

Ways to make it better...

the teacher had not experienced difficulties within the classroom as well as with the lack of volunteers and help within the classroom.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Volunteers, under-funded school classrooms, and possibly book availability.

One thing I'd also say is that...

regardless of the challenges it is facing, i still enrolled for being a penpal again this school semester! happy reading!

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every month
