These people are seriously dedicated to their mission - To Save and Enhance Lives! Positive spirit and enthusiasm are matched by their appreciation for their volunteers. As a volunteer dog socializer they provided training, resources, and flexibility to allow me to help these wonderful animals at my own pace, and on my own schedule. I've been able to make a difference in my community (four-legged, and two-legged), and I sincerely thank Humane Society Silicon Valley for that!!

I've volunteered for HSSV for almost a year now. The physical shelter itself is what every shelter should strive to be: a community center. It's certified green and everything has been designed with the animals' happiness in mind. For example, the cats aren't cramped in little cages, but have huge rooms to explore and live in. I mentioned the facility first because I think it is representative of the organization as a whole: progressive, professional, and a leader in the community. While other shelters get by doing what they've always done, I truly feel that HSSV is always looking towards the future. The animal community and it's problems aren't static - they are constantly evolving. We need more animal welfare agencies like HSSV, who constantly innovate to stay in tune with what is going on in the community. The one thing I think HSSV should continue to improve is its live save rate, the percentage of orphaned animals who leave HSSV alive. Congratulations to HSSV staff for December 2009's highest live save rate of 91%. Now let's get it into the upper 90's, where an organization of HSSV's caliber should be. My wish is that this review inspires you to donate, support and volunteer for HSSV, and--as you should with any animal shelter--critically examine the organization's save rate and ask tough questions about it.

Mouser was the first kitten I adopted from HSSV and that was over 30 years ago. Most recently I adopted one of my foster kittens, Wiggums. Since adopting Wiggums, he's had some play aggression issues. I contacted the Animal Behavior team at HSSV and they gave me great ideas and tips on how to handle his behavior. Their advice has been invaluable and Wiggums' behavior has improved. I'm also a volunteer at HSSV, socializing cats, fostering kittens and helping out during special events. HSSV is a great organization. They go the extra mile to care for and love every animal that enters the facility. The highly educated and trained staff has created a unique environment dedicated to educating the community and saving lives. My life has been enriched through my involvement with HSSV.

I started fostering kittens for HSSV 10 years ago. I have seen first hand how much care, both loving and medical these animals get. Many shelters would not spend the time and money to save some of these who are weakened by parasites & illness. The animals they adopt out are sweet, loving & playful. Both my cats came from hssv.

I became involved with HSSV as a donor a few years back. My husband and I were favorably impressed with the staff and management and their dedication to improving the lives of the animals they serve. We consider our donations well directed to the care and adoption of wonderful pets and their potential owners and have a deep sense of pride in being able to support such a special organization.

I waited to get involved with a non-profit until I found one that I thought was exceptionally well-managed. When I was introduced to HSSV, I knew this was an organization I wanted to be involved with. The leadership and the staff are passionate, committed, and extremely competent. The new animal community center which HSSV opened in Milipitas is the best evidence of their efforts. It is truly a wonderful place for animals and for people to interact with animals in need. Come visit and have a look. I think you'll be impressed.

I adopted my cat Sunny from this organization. They were wonderful! I told them I was looking for a cat to adopt and they showed me all the different cats and kittens that were available. They were very patient and kind and answered all my questions. I wanted to adopt any cat that was considered hard to adopt (e.g., blind, old, sick, etc.) because it would just be me and the cat (no other animals or kids to compete with) and I wanted to rescue an especially needy one. They showed me a cat named Sweetpea (I renamed her Sunny). They had taken very good notes on her so that I could see what she was all about. And I remember something in particular. When I told them I wanted to adopt her, they asked me to reach in the cage and get her and hold her. I opened the door and petted her and she was very friendly. She didn't look like she wanted to be picked up and I said that to the volunteer. They said to go ahead and hold her gently. So I did, and then I put her back in the cage. It really impressed me, because I think they wanted to make sure I would be loving and gentle with her. Whatever their reason, I got a really good vibe from it. I had to wait three days to adopt her so that she could be spayed. When I came to pick her up I went to the front desk. The volunteer said "You are here to pick up an animal you are adopting, right?" And I said "Yes, how did you know?" And she said "You have that really happy look about you." That was great; they are very in tune to people and animals there. They did a great job of interviewing me to try and make sure the adoption would work out well for both me and the cat. They gave me all kinds of useful information when I picked her up to take her home. Sunny has been with me for eight years and it has been wonderful! I highly recommend this organization!

I adopted my first dog from HSSV about 6 years ago. I am grateful everyday that I have her in my life. I was very impressed with the staff at HSSV during my adoption process. The staff is professional and cares about their animals. I recently started volunteering and see from the inside how much work goes into caring for the animals.

I've been a volunteer since 2001. I started because I just wanted a "dog fix" and I stayed because of the incredible commitment to animals that this organization has. They are professional and caring. The new animal community center was built not just to look beautiful, but to turn the concept of animal sheltering on its ear and really get ahead of the homeless pet problem. I really appreciate that they make quality adoptions a priority, and give animals extra time and care when they need it.

make enormous progress in animal welfare in the bay area. Not to mention educating our children and communities to be more compassionate.

We're so thankful to HSSV for our newest family member, Friendly. Not only do they have a great facility and easy-to-use website, their staff are helpful and caring too. I had adopted our last pet through the San Francisco Humane Society, and was unaware until a few weeks ago that we had a similarly excellent facility in Santa Clara. The animals are homed in clean, naturally lit rooms that allow them their own space while potential adoptive families can watch and observe before meeting them up close. The staff were extra helpful with tips on how our family (with kids) could best find our new dog. They provided excellent veterinary care, and detailed records that allowed us to make an informed decision about the dog we eventually decided to adopt. We are lucky to have a facility like this that rescues animals from local animal centers that lack the resources to treat sick or injured animals that just need a little loving care.
