Mission: Promote international human rights through local service to refugees and immigrants who have suffered human rights abuses.
Programs: HRI came into existence out of the concern for those individuals who seek safe haven in the United States after suffering persecution. HRI represents clients from many different countries, such as: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Liberia, Cameroon, Angola, Ethiopia, Armenia, Iran, Kenya, Sudan, Honduras, Iraq, Uganda, Turkey, Chad, Tanzania, Burundi, Togo, and Egypt. - Legal Services provides consultation and representation at the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Immigration Court, or the Board of Immigration Appeals for those seeking political asylum. Clients must present a compelling case for asylum, providing proof of persecution or the well-founded fear of persecution based on one or more of the following: race, religion, nationality, political opinions, and/or membership in a particular social group. Clients qualify for this free legal representation by demonstrating their inability to pay legal fees.
As a physician I cannot recall any work that has been more fulfilling than my work for HRI clients. It has broadened my medical expertise, used up every part of my life experience and personalized international news in a life changing way. The HRI staff is solid, knowledgeable and experienced so my inexperience has not been a hindrance. The HRI clients are heroes - people I was lucky to read about who now I can personally help and get to know on a deep level. This is the most rewarding work I have ever done. I feel deep gratitude for the staff and the clients. They all have my undying admiration.
I have been a pro bono lawyer for this agency since it's inception in 1999. My experience has been unfailingly positive. This is the best example of a non profit with a huge heart, but run in an extremely efficient and effective way. Lives are saved because of the efforts of this talented team.
