I have been a volunteer at HOME for about a year now. I have worked in the field of homes and services for the aging for more than 13 years. HOME serves older adults on the south and west sides of Chicago who are most often experiencing the highest level of financial distress and are in significant need of support through affordable housing, home maintenance services, and assistance with moving. When I visited one of our apartment buildings I was moved by the residents I met and impressed with the staff. I am proud to be a supporter of HOME as it is truly worthy of philanthropic support.

My wife volunteers for H.O.M.E. and I've tagged along a few times. The older people this agency serves are very low-income. Some would be homeless if it were not for H.O.M.E.'s low-cost intergenerational housing. It is so cool to see a big typical family dinner table with the elders, the students and the staff all having dinner together.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Hearing my wife talk about the stories of individual seniors it has helped. Like the accountant who lost all his savings by age 62 trying to save his wife from cancer, and then became depressed when she died. H.O.M.E. gave him hope, housing and family.

That it gives me a chance to give to seniors who are not as lucky as my own Mom.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Really caring. You can tell from the way they interact -- they are so comfortable with the seniors. Many clients were invited to their 25th anniversity celebration event!
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Restart its furniture donation program, run additional intergenerational housing sites, and really expand its home repair program to help people who need home modifications to avoid nursing homes.

I have known residents, staff, volunteers who have been involved with HOME. All are impressed with the concept of intergenerational living and of the quality of care offered to those who are elderly. My mother was involved in the founding of HOME and always supported it during her lifetime. I continue to do so through volunteer work.

I was honored to be associated with HOME for three years. The organization, the leadership and most importantly, the dedicated staff, is dedicated to bringing the highest degree of services to the our most needy seniors. It is a great organizaton.

H.O.M.E. is the only agency in the City of Chicago that is dedicated to providing programing to assist the inner-city elderly to "Age with Dignity". H.O.M.E.'s program and dedicated staff help seniors remain independent and active members of their community. Citywide support services include: Upkeep and Repair Services, Free Shopping tranportation services, intergenerational housing and volunteer services. As the population continues to age, the needs of this population will continue to grow.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
providing transporation to seniors to grocery stores and drug stores in underserved areas of the city. Senior have a safe mode of transporation and an activity to get them out into the community and out of their isolation.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
continue to expand the board of directors with corporate executive membership and to initiate a "Women's Board" to coordinate fund raising and donor cultivation.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
The dedication of the staff, the board & the appreciation of the clients. The clients have been hard working members of society, trying to live on social security and barely making ends meet. The joy of seeing the appreciation in their faces is priceless.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
The staff is extremely dedicated to the mission.. The volunteers, especially the younger groups, bring so much energy and enthusiasm to the programs. The time spent with the seniors is valuable for both volunteer and client.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Expand all of the programs especially the intergenerational living. As the senior population grows, these type of independent living arrangements will greatly improve seniors quality of life.
Ways to make it better...
H.O.M.E. had the resources to serve more inner city elderly.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
fundraising and marketing and communication. Culturally, the US has not been a leader in honoring the elderly, therefore, the social responsibility toward the elderly are not as prominent in our society.
One thing I'd also say is that...
Dignity is defined as the "quality of being worthy, honored or esteemed." H.O.M.E.'s mission is to provide that sense of being to the inner city elderly of Chicago through its programs.

H.O.M.E. fills a void that no other nonprofits in Chicago address -- the dignity of older pesons who have worked hard their whole lives but find themselves living in poverty while battling the challenges of aging. Staff are compassionate and the agency spends its resources wisely. The agency also is a model for intergenerational living with its award winning residences.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
improved living conditions of Chicago's impoverished elders; improved safety for low-income older homeowners; access of elders to lower cost, higher quality food; intergenerational living that reduces isolation.
