Well I want to first start off by saying that the entire staff at H.R.S. are truly a blessing from JESUS! Especially our good friend and brother in Christ, Doug Barnes. He has been a mentor, friend, brother and leader for us and there's nothing that he wouldn't do for someone. It's people like him that show the LOVE of JESUS!! AMEN BROTHER, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Doug Barnes the general manager was so rude and ignored me and my son this morning we have been sitting and waiting for him he did not even said hi and did not even ask us why we are there, so when I went to the door of his office and said why he does not talk to us because I have another appointment he said he has things to do , He seems very prejudice he hated us because we are not American , I felt sorry for him if he thinks he is serving on God Almighty, who wants to live in a place which is runs by an ignorant like him. The moment he saw us arrived he went to his office and did ignored us , we pray that Almighty guid him .

The Great!

I am currently a mentor at House of Hope Sunnyslope to a young single mother of three. I have served at House of Hope since October of last year and this is the second single mom I have had the privilege to work with. Although the first mom I worked with was asked to leave the program, I was completely supportive of and impressed by the Godly way everything was handled. Grace was extended by HOH leadership on so many occasions. In the end the decision to ask her to leave was only made after HOH leadership spent much time in prayer and sought Godly counsel. I now have the privilege of working with a mother who understands how blessed she is to be a part of this program and is working hard to be self-supportive mother and woman of God.

The young mother I currently mentor is an amazing example of what God can and will do. She is almost done w/ her education and is actively seeking employment in her new field.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would provide them with more resources. They do an amazing job with the resources they have, but I would love to see what they could do with even more.

Last year I started volunteering at the House of Hope. I felt drawn to serve God by using my time and talents to help single mothers. I fell in love with the program and was so impressed by the women who reside there as well as the leadership and volunteers. The program offers support to help them find stable employement and/or an education. The road is not easy for these women but in the one year the program has been up and running it has grown in size and provided support to many women and their children.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the growth of the program. House of Refuge has allocated more resources and space to helping more women and their children. I have seen people grow in their responsibilities to their families and their love of Jesus Christ.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

help to bring in additional volunteers to meet the needs of this growing program.

I was so excited to be apart of the House of Refuge/House of Hope when I came into contact with the organization. It seemed like a great way to help young single moms get on their feet. After being involved with the organization for just under a year things have come to light that have completely changed my opinion. If you want to volunteer for a place that does the following:
1. Puts lock boxes on the woman's apartments air conditioners/heat. I was in an apartment that was over 89 degrees in the spring/one apartment was down to 64 degrees in the winter.
2. If a woman decides to leave the program they have to sign an agreement that they are no longer allowed to talk with anyone in the program or their mentor. So friends they have made and relationships they have built are cut off.
3. Current residents are warned that if that if they interact with the individual who left they will be written up.
4. People from the program can enter their apartment at anytime with out notice.
5. Women if they break the rules are often asked to leave and only given 2-3 days to move out.
6. Most of the women are scared to speak up because they know if they do they could lose the place they live in.

The Great!

Yes, I have seen results. During my time at the House of Hope, I saw a high turnover of young ladies.

I wish there had to be more transparency with how leadership is running things and how they treat residents. I had been there for months and was unaware of what was going on. There is very little accountability and a lot of secrecy. May be this kind of behavior is acceptable, but to me I was left heart broken.

We are one of the families that brother paul's ministry helps out. After cooking and helping in the kitchen there is all this food that he has helpers distribute to needy families. It has been an amazing blessing specially when we don't get the hours needed at work and are short on money. We get all this wonderful food that help us get by till we get payed again. With the economy and how bills just go up is a blessing to know that there are people supporting brother paul's ministry to help does that have a hard time getting by. Just wanted to say thank you to brother paul and all those who contribute to his ministry. May the Lord bless you

is all the help he offers for those that are trying to structure their lives again coming off the streets.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help so many homeless people get off the streets.

I first came to the House of Refuge to cook dinner. The very first time I set foot inside, I knew that this was exactly where God intended for me to invest my time and talents. I began by cooking and serving dinners and then expanded my efforts into providing whatever might be needed with guidance from the director. My situation allowed me to invite my friends to help me help HRS. So many people want to do good things but just don't know exactly how to go about it. God used me to connect these two groups. So, we (me and my friends) made blankets, we carved pumpkins and awarded prizes,we went bowling, played softball, we contributed money, food clothing, household items and lots more. I've become the "official/ UNofficial" house Mom. I join the men for dinner and other activities as often as I can. I have been blessed to get acquainted with many of the men and learn their stories and their struggles. Sometimes just being someone they can talk to is a really big deal. Shees, I love this place! Director Paul Williams has made HRS a safe place for the men to be. They can find support to do the things they need to get back on their feet. HRS is a great place thanks to the great staff and the willingness of the men to actively work at their own recovery. I am currently President of the Board and HRS is clearly where I want to help out.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

deepened faith, creating friendships, building a community of help and support with others that participate at HRS

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have a staff member that could do case work. and have more volunteers that could mentor and/or disciple the men

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the men. They are working hard to be good, productive people.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

all wonderful, loving, giving people

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Help more men, reach out to families, women and children and disabled people. There are lots of people that need help to get by in today's world.

Ways to make it better...

I had more opportunity to present HRS to people that could help.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Lack of exposure to the kinds of organizations that can offer financial support. The misconception of "homeless shelter"

One thing I'd also say is that...

House of Refuge is "where the rubber meets the road" A dollar spent at HRS can make a profound difference in somebody's life. The love of God is utmost and we are a better home for it.

Over the last five years, we have seen Paul Williams as director of House of Refuge do huge things in a little place. He provides transitional refuge for men who have had little else to cling to. Along with healing spiritual wounds, he aids in the every-day practical needs by helping develop windows to employment search, provides a secure home-style environment where men can regain a sense of acceptance, self-respect, and accountability, and see a concrete demonstration of Christ's love. Various organizations donate food to House of Refuge. The excess doesn't go to waste. The House of Refuge passes it on to the David and Goliath International Ministries (not to be confused with another organization of similar name) and Desert Hills Evangelical Free Church ministries. Over 100 needy families are served.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

providing me with a service ministry where I can meed needs of people less fortunate than I.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The personal contact with the director and the workers at House of Refuge

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Helpful, generous, cheerful, friendly.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

use it far more efficiently than similar government-run programs.
