Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Homeless & Housing, Housing Development, Construction & Management, Housing Support, Philanthropy, Private Grantmaking Foundations

Mission: The mission of the Home Builders Care Foundation (HBCF) is to give back by utilizing the skills and resources of building industry members on shelter-related construction for the homeless and others at-risk. Our efforts help community non-profits and local governments meet the challenges of caring for our neighbors in need. We leverage our industry’s strengths to save agencies thousands of dollars in the construction process.

Results: Since our inception in 1984, HBCF has: * Contributed more than $20,000,000 worth of materials and labor to supportive housing and shelter projects in Maryland and the District. The total value of our projects is estimated to be more than double that amount. * Delivered more than 1,500 beds and units of respectable shelter and housing for our most vulnerable citizens. These units serve thousands in need on an annual basis. * Collaborated with over 90 local nonprofits on projects. * Averaged a rate of 87% of our total expenses going directly to program services

Target demographics: build housing for the homeless and families in crisis

Direct beneficiaries per year: house 76 persons in crisis

Geographic areas served: Maryland

Programs: Our work empowers these agencies to focus resources on direct client services that lead to stability. Nearly all of our partnering agencies receive funding for program operations, but maintenance and improvement funds are harder to come by. We help make projects feasible. * We have transformed once-abandoned apartments and single family homes to develop new units of housing for families seeking housing stability. * We have built new shelters for the homeless, including the 135-bed Home Builders Care Assessment Center in Montgomery County. * We have made safe and comfortable scores of group homes and transitional housing facilities by making energy-efficient and accessible improvements.

Home Builders Care Foundation helped my organization rehbilitate a small, foreclosed apartment building so we could provide permanent housing for single women with small children who were homeless. They played an important advisory role, especially on selecting contractor and determining the scope of the renovations needed. Then they provided funds to bridge the gap and get the project completed. HBCF has completed four such projects with us in recent years so they are a great partner.

As the coordinator of projects Home Builders Care Foundation have done for our Non-Profit, Human Service agency, I have to say that they do wonderful things for the community. Even before the turn in the economy, money has always been tight with non-profits and Home Builders Care realizes that. Over the last thirteen years, they have done several home maintenance projects for us, paying all expenses. It has been a tremendous pleasure to know this organization and know that they care about giving back to the community.

On two separate occassions, Home Builders Care Foundation gifted time and materials to Malta House. Malta House is an Assisted Living community in Hyattsville, Maryland. Malta House serves frail seniors with limited income and assets. HBCF replaced all of the common area carpet. The carpet was over ten years old and in desperate need of replacement. HBCF secured the vendor and gifted the carpet and installation. A few years later, we requested that HBCF work with us in transforming our residental grade kitchen into a commercial kitchen. HBCF secured two organizations that designed and installed this new kitchen. All laminate cabinets and counters were removed and replaced with stainless steel open shelving and stainless work services. Flooring tile was repaired and plumbing and electrical issues were addressed. From start to finish, all work was conducted professionally. The giving spirit and true appreciation of our seniors was apparent by all involved. Without HBCF, this work would have never been completed. We will forever be appreciative of this organization and its mission and purpose.

The D.C. affiliate of Home Builders Care Foundation, HomeAid DC LLC, is a committed and patient partner for Building Futures' newest project, Daffodil House. HomeAid DC is providing significant financial support and helped identify a contractor to make accessibility modifications to the front entrance and first floor apartments at Daffodil House. This 30-unit property provides permanent supportive housing for persons living with HIV/AIDS and other disabilities. Most of our residents were homeless prior to moving into the property. HomeAid DC has been patient as we awaited the award of a D.C. grant for construction, which was leveraged by their grant. We're grateful for their support and their appreciation of the goals we will achieve by providing housing to an extremely vulnerable population of D.C. residents.
