Mission: Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen is located in the heart of Chelsea in New York City. What started as a temporary feeding program in 1982 has now become the largest in the tri-state area, and we've served over 7 million meals since then - but the real story is how we help guests move off the soup kitchen line into employment, their own homes, and a more manageable and fulfilling way of life. Not only do we provide a hot meal to over 1,200 New Yorkers in need every single day, our dedicated counseling staff also work with our guests to connect them with benefits, housing and job interviews. No one is ever turned away from our door.
Results: The soup kitchen has never missed a serving day in thirty years, despite hurricanes, blizzards, transit shutdowns and terrorist attacks. On our very first day we served 34 meals - now we serve upwards of 1,200 every day. We have expanded our programs to respond to the changing needs of our guests, and today we offer counseling, referrals, healthcare and enrichment services, as well as a seasonal Writers' Workshop that showcases the creative abilities of our guests and volunteers. On average our counselors hold individual daily sessions with over 1,500 guests per month, providing them with vital assistance and advice: "I didn't know I could get retirement benefits. Caroline showed me that, and made the application for me. The money came through just as I was about to lose my apartment. If it wasn't for Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, I'd be on the streets now." - Jose, former soup kitchen guest "I didn't want to go to a soup kitchen, but I had nowhere else to turn. It was nothing like I expected - everyone made me feel so welcome, like I was coming home. I had this feeling I hadn't had in a long time. I felt at peace. I knew we were going to make it no matter what. " - Susan, mother of five

The Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen is the most efficient charity organization that I have ever been involved with. I was amazed at the competence of all staff members and the apparent ease with which they were able to serve over 1000 people a hot lunch. What a great organization run by such great people!

I had the opportunity to volunteer at Holy Apostles' Soup Kitchen when I was in NYC on an Alternative Spring Break trip with college students in 2012. I was impressed with the way that the organization was able to feed some many people in need day in and day out. You could tell the regular volunteers and staff are passionate about serving those in need.... They give them food for their stomaches and hope for tomorrow!

There is no more dedicated organization. They have consistently served the community and treated their clients with the utmost respect for decades. They offer food for the mind, body, and soul! I am humbled and proud to be able to say I have volunteered here.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Absolutely none. I would not to presume that I could improve their incredible hard work, dedication, and organization. I would only change them by giving them more money to do what they do.

I first started volunteering at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen seven or eight years ago. I brought my 7th and 8th Grade students from I.S. 52. It was a rewarding experience for them and for me. Not only were we privileged to see a side of life that we were totally unaccustomed to, we also experienced the warmth and the caring of the volunteers. I retired for teaching 3 years ago and I still go every Friday and love it.

I became familiar with the work of Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen via a fb effort to raise a modest amount of money for a match. I was bowled over by the numbers of people helped with such modest resources. But of course the financial resources are matched by the huge heart of the organization. They pull in volunteers from all over. Young people come to help for a day and I can't but believe they are changed for life. Long may they serve. They are a model of efficiency and decency.

I used to sing professionally at this church. I was there when the church burned, but the Soup Kitchen didn't miss a beat - they served their clients the very next day despite the disaster. They have continued that tradition for so many years, and I have watched many clients enter hungry and downtrodden, and leave with a smile and a full stomach. And now the added services they offer are inspirig. I read works from the writers workshop with pleasure. I have moved on to another church, and another state, but have continued to admired their work. A few years ago, I brought my youth choir to sing for the guests and we had a great time. Father Bill, the founder, always said the church never really wanted to be in the soup kitchen business, but the reality of the city proved otherwise. He and the staff have faithfully carried out a mission that they wish they didn't have to do.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give them lots of money.

My late husband volunteered at the Soup Kitchen every Tues. for fifteen years. We could always see the great need and invaluable service of this group. Now I am a monthly contributor. I hope the Soup Kitchen will continue until it is no longer needed. Meanwhile, pray for all who serve and those they serve.
