My late husband volunteered at the Soup Kitchen every Tues. for fifteen years. We could always see the great need and invaluable service of this group. Now I am a monthly contributor. I hope the Soup Kitchen will continue until it is no longer needed. Meanwhile, pray for all who serve and those they serve.

It is an amazing thing when a community can occasionally live its vision authentically. This transformed church building--to be a welcoming place for all--shows what a transformed community can do: they knew that hospitality for the weekday feeding program meant more than keeping the customary look of a church for the Sunday spiritual meal the parish community continues to share at the Eucharist. The space, like the sharing of communion, is about being transformed for the sake of others.

I moved into the Chelsea neighborhood about 10 years ago -- just two blocks north of the soup kitchen. Everyday the lines would form with the old, young, infirm, healthy, black, white, latino, men and women. It was sometimes hard to see them all. But as the great recession hit in 2009, all of a sudden I thought that I, too, might one day need to join them. It's an amazing service the soup kitchen provides to all, with a friendly, dedicated group of volunteers and staff. The neighborhood is a better place -- it has a heart and soul -- thanks to the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen.

This soup kitchen feeds the hungry day in day out year after year--feeds them body and soul, including drumming circles and a writing workshop. It is a place where those who happen to need a square meal are treated with respect for their dignity and with authentic compassion.

It was with great honor and humility that I served on the vestry and board of directors of Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen! What a great ministry this is to those in need in the City of New York. I have seen first hand the impact this has on so many people, on a daily basis! There are thousands of people who would have not eaten a full meal without the apostolate, vision, and commitment of the Church of the Holy Apostles!

I volunteer at HASK whenever I can, and am delighted not only to be able to help so many hungry people get a nutritious meal and lonely, possibly homeless people spend some time in a welcoming environment, but also because it's inspiring to feel a part of something larger: the machinery of the staff and volunteers works so well, everyone with something to do, everyone helping others, it's a model of a perfect world.

I remember the first time I volunteered at HASK. The sense of community, friendship and genuine compassion between the volunteers and guests was inspiring. I left the soup kitchen feeling uplifted and motivated to do something to help this amazing organization continue to carry out its mission. With the support of my professor and classmates at NYU, we organized a fundraiser to help support this beloved soup kitchen continue to provide free nutritious meals and foster opportunities for guests to access the tools and resources needed to help them through times of transition. I can't describe how amazing it is to be apart if this empowering community of volunteers and guests. I highly recommend Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen as top nonprofit. I also highly recommend those who want to make a difference to volunteer and/or participate in fundraising initiatives that will support HASK in continuing to carrying out its mission and services to the community.

I have been a parishioner at Holy Apostles for more than a decade and am now a member of the vestry. The church has a deep-felt commitment to the Soup Kitchen because we believe it reflects God's commandment: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. I have personally known people who came to the Soup Kitchen for help and have since gone on to regain jobs, housing and healthcare because there was a place for them to come that would give them support when their lives had gone awry. I will never forget the smart, talented woman who had been a journalist who had a nervous breakdown and was putting her life back together, or the hard working mother of three beautiful children who was escaping a bad marriage. Both got back on their feet because they felt they were not only given a meal at the Soup Kitchen, but the kind of love and support they were lacking in the rest of their lives.
