Review from Guidestar
January 26, 2013

Hiss and Spit assisted in the soft release of some sparrows that I had rehabilitated. The sparrows were quite young and ill when I received them. After a few months time when they were fully feathered, healthy, and eating on their own, I contacted Hiss and Spit for them to assist in the sparrows' soft release.

It was such a comfort to hear the well thought out steps that Hiss and Spit took to take the sparrows through the necessary steps until their permanent release. I was even e-mailed photos of the sparrows in their new permanent and safe environment.

H&S helps local shelters, rescuers and low incom epet owners through various initiatives designed to address community issues that frequently are overlooked. I have contributed to their programs since I met them last year at an adoption event in SoHo. The program that is most unique is the food bank for pet owners who would otherwise lose thier pet due to stressful economic times. I was also impressed with their TNR activities. More than one friend has adopted from Hiss & Spit and they hae been uniformly pleased with the treatment they received from the organization. My imporession is that H&S practices what it preaches. In my experience, there's a very high level of professionalism shown by this organization in its dealings with donors and with the community of pet owners and rescuers.

Hiss and Spit is an invaluable resource in assisting me to manage a feral cat community that was overrunning my neighborhood. They have guided me in health and wellbeing issues, in understanding outdoor colony animals, and the importance and facilitation of a spay and neuter program. I have called many times with questions regarding individual feral cat handling, trapping, wellness, recovery and release issues. As a low income person, I also deeply appreciate their assistance with vet bills for injured feral cats when no other assistance was available. I give them the highest 5 star rating for their continuing work and the impact that they have made on so many feral cat lives in my community. I have received many compliments for the work that I have been able to do with the invaluable assistance of Hiss and Spit. I can't thank them enough for the work that they are doing. (Note: I can't see what the rating system is, or what the scale is for this computer program. I therefore need to indicate that they receive the highest marks from me for their assistance, how they treated me, and my recommendation to friends.)

Hiss & Spit is an organization run by very generous, kind-hearted human beings. In the midst of a crisis that left me with no home for 2 cats that had been abandoned in a former roommate situation, they gave me important advice and pointed me in the right direction to find a home for my cats. Thank you so much!

Hiss&Spit is a great organization. They helped me find a foster situation for my cats when I lost my apartment and had to bunk with friends. They are the only group that I approached with my situation who was able to help me, and other groups were unhelpful and disinterested. I found out by speaking with their reps that they have fostered through the police dept during local emergencies, and they also work with other groups and shelters as needed. I am grateful to Hiss&Spit for helping me during a bad time, and I will continue to donate to their programs, especially the food bank for pets in need.

I saw the H&S volunteer team at the adoption fair, where I was impressed with the quality of their volunteers and the condition of the animals for adoption. I had adopted from another group a while back and never got any vet records and ended up with a cat with several medical issues. H&S showed me up to date checkup records to read about the cat that I wanted to adopt. They also checked my apt. before confirming the adoption, and also contacted my vet. They helped introduce the new cat to my current alpha cat and it went smoothly. They are now best buds and I want to thank H&S for the work they do and for making the new cat experience a very positive one.

I met two volunteers of Hiss&Spit when they helped my neighbor do TNR for a few cats that she had been feeding in her yard. The Trap neuter return system helps to keep the population from increasing, it's better for the health of the animals . They gave me information about where to get my cat spayed for low cost. I rescued her from the street
and I needed an affordable veterinary service. I recomended Hiss&Spit to another friend who is looking to adopt a cat for the first time, since they were very helpful and gave us a lot of good information.

We adopted a cat several months ago, which had been rescued by Hiss&Spit in really sorry shape, she was diagnosed by the vet with cancer and even tho her prognosis was a few months to live, H&S treated her and gave her a chance for a new life. I was so impressed with their efforts on behalf of this poor kitty that I asked to adopt her for her remaining days. The good news is that her recent vet visit shows a full recovery, and that the original diagnosis was due to infections and not cancer. She is a real character and plays like a kitten .
We adopted another cat from H&S once her recovery was certain, and chose a cat well up in his years, since the older ones are harder to find homes for. H&S took care of dentistry before we adopted him.
I have volunteered for H&S at adoption events and they always have information for people in the community who need to find low cost resources or TNR for the animals they care for.
H&S rescues all have veterinary records, which not all groups can provide. Every animal is given the opportunity to enjoy a new life, they are not disregarded because of their condition or age or infirmities.
That's real rescue in my opinion.

I have known the staff at Hiss and Spit for over a year now and can HIGHLY recommend them as one of the best shelters in the City. I have seen first hand how they care for animals, their careful attention to animlas that have been rescued and their overall attention to making SURE that the animlas in their care are adopted by families that will make a committment to provide a forever home.

I am in AWE of the committment and time that they spend every week of the year to help animals and that when they can't take any more animals they provide support and suggestions to other top shelters in the area.

I adopted 2 cats from them not long ago and they have turned out to be 2 of the sweetest cats I have ever known.

I met the team at Hiss and Spit at a very sad time of my life and not only did they help in a very real way, they also gave me guidance and support that I have not seen at ANY other shelter.

So a HUGE THANK YOU,,,,,,HISS AND SPIT, and please know that there are lots of us out there both 2 legged AND 4 legged that so appreciate what you do. There are so many kitties that would be in kitty heaven now if you had not stepped in to help!!!!!!!!!

Nothing ........what I would change would be the attitude of people that animals are not something that can be thrown out like trash, which is what alot of people do in the City. That's why Hiss and Spit is so vital a shelter.

I adopted 2 beautiful, healthy, Loveable cats from Hiss & Spit at a street adoption event. I was treated with respect and have all my paperwork from their veterinarian. I don't understand the many ugly comments by one or two people on this site. It seems to be a personal vendetta and not even a review. Hiss & Spit, thank you for the cats; the follow up visits and all the great information you gave me for caring for my babies.
