My son was "on grade level" according to the public school system, even though he came home every day unsure of how to do the homework and lost all interest in school along with every ounce of his self confidence. When he was due to enter a private middle school, he was tested just to confirm he was on grade level, which I assumed was true since every one of his report cards from elementary school indicated such. Much to my surprise and dismay he was an entire year behind, more in certain areas. After one year at The Highlands School he caught up to grade level in reading and is slowly making progress to catch up in math. But more importantly, he has learned to love to learn again. He was in a play, gets to enjoy activities like cooking and wood shop, and feels like he is a part of a community.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the year that my son has attended the school. I am looking forward to more positive results this year.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase the donor support, especially corporations and educational companies. The high staff ratio and low student population make it extremely expensive to attend. Perhaps some federal funding opportunites for children with learning disabilities, more like what is available at the college level.

My son has been at The Highlands School for 4 years. At his old school, he was a C-D student with no self-esteem and a chip on his shoulder. Upon entering, he was 3 years below grade level in math and reading skills. Now, he is on high school level reading and near grade level math - that is an increase of 6-7 grade levels in reading and 5 grade levels of math! His self-esteem has improved immensely and he feels confident and ready to transition to the next step. Without the Highlands, he would be a totally different person - lost in the system and without hope. Sometimes the tuition was a challenge to meet, but without elementary success, college money would not be needed because he would not have made it that far.

The Great!

Add more students!

I have worked here at The Highlands School for the past 8 years and have seen so many children served in such a positive way. Not only do the students gain the academic skills they need, they also grow in self-confidence. They feel successful here. The learning environment is warm and supportive both for the students and for the staff. It's a pleasure to work here.

I have personally seen the change in facial expressions and attitude to so many of the students who come to our school. They think they are not very smart and they have very low self esteem. Upon working with our staff and seeing positive results for themselves, it is as if a light switch goes on. These same students realize that they not "stupid", they just learn differently than other kids. Parent after parent will comment about the same outward change in their child's behavior. For the first time, the students actually WANT to come to school and they ENJOY learning. It is awesome to see.

My daughter enrolled in The Highlands School in 6th grade. I saw an immediate change in her attitude and confidence. Her academic performance increased two grade levels. The Highlands School is a safety net to students struggling to learn. The Highlands School changes the lives of students who attend here. Students leave with strategies to be able to learn in a regular school setting.

What a blessing it's been to have our son at Highlands! Before he came to Highlands a little over a year ago, he struggled to keep up with his academics - in spite of attending a before-school reading program, working with a private tutor after school, all the extra help we gave him with homework and even completing summer school work and programs. We felt like he was a little sieve and no matter how many holes we plugged, more of what he needed to retain was spilling out and he was becoming increasingly frustrated - in class and at home. At Highlands, they are plugging those holes! His program is so individualized and he has time to master the skills taught. He feels good about all that he's accomplished. He made the honor roll all four quarters last year, is becoming a more confident reader, and completes his homework all on his own - with no tears or frustration. He feels better about himself and loves coming to school. What a difference Highlands has made in his life!!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my own child. He is much happier, less stressed and is learning strategies he needs to be successful after he leaves Highlands. The teachers and staff really know him. They know how to help him, encourage him and genuinely care about him. Their personal commitment and dedication is evident in everthing they do.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

expand the school so that it served students in kindergarten through high school, not just through 8th grade. The need for a school like Highlands is great...even in the high school years.

The Highlands School believes that children who learn differently need to be taught differently. This school has helped so many children realize that different IS NOT LESS THAN. Not only are the children helped academically, but they are nutured socially and truly blossom in this environment. The child are taught organization skills and life skills that they use when they transition from The Highlands School to a typical environment.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The growth and development of my child.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Provide them with the capacity to grow into multiple locations so that other children would be taught and guided by The Highlands School principles and values.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing my daughter learn and grow in such a safe, nurturing way.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

some of the most kind, caring and educated people I have ever met.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the way all children are taught.

Ways to make it better...

The school was able to reach capacity so that more children would be there and more friends could be available to my daughter.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Educating the public about the programs that are offered, and helping families find the tuition monies so that their children can attend the school.

One thing I'd also say is that...

how lucky we have been to find The Highlands School, and how much I would welcome the opportunity to tell others about it.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every month
