Val with HART is so amazing and dedicated! Through HART she helped a friend who is financially challenged get her cats fixed, shots, etc., and she personally provided all transportation ( a pregnant mom, her 4 young kittens and a young tom). She has since followed up with the situation, helping with sick kitties (medicine, wormings), treating the animals herself. She even treated this lady's neighbor's cat! Plus, Val keeps me informed of the contacts. Hart has paid for all. Val responded immediately when I first called about my friend in need. Excellent!!!

Val also helped me and my neighbors when we rescued an abandoned and hungry stray cat at our condos. She posted his story on her Examiner website, requesting he be considered a wonderful candidate for adoption. She posted his picture - Huck found a home

I knew that someone was doing TNR on the bike trail near my house - I'd seen the feeding stations & ear-tipped cats. One day I saw a cat from the colony limping; his paw had been badly burned in a nearby fire. He let me catch him & take him to a vet. He ended up living here & forgot quickly he was ever feral. I finally lucked into meeting the wonderful people from HART that had cared for Simon for years. Small group, but they accomplish so much! I had to join them as a volunteer.

doing TNR, arranging spay/neuter & other medical services. HART has made significant inroads in feral populations, introduced me to some amazing people and helped me get Simon, my beautiful former-feral boy.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

working with Barbara and Joanie, who are among the kindest, most hard-working and loving people I've known. They work their butts off to help animals, then shrug it off as if they haven't done much at all. trust me - they have done a LOT.

Helen's Animal Rescue Team (HART, Sacramento) is a very small but highly effective non-profit whose goal is to help keep the feral and/or unwanted cat/kitten population from exploding. I've fed feral cats along a popular bike/walk trail for 5 or 6 years because HART pays for the food. There is no overhead as we personally shelter sick/injured cats/kittens ourselves and only charge the amount paid for neutering when placing our animals. All potential adoptive owners are screened to ensure the cats we place go to good homes. I can't say enough good things about HART and it's small band of volunteers!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Over a period of 5 to 6 years. I feed about 27 feral cats every day.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

No changes are needed. It would be nice if there were a few more volunteers to feed in case one of us gets sick.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Learning about how feral cat colonies interact; helping trap cats and/or kittens dumped/abandoned along the trail and meeting people who care about animals

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very caring about all animals and willing to go the extra mile to ensure their safety and well-being

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Purchase property to house as many unwanted/feral cats, dogs, whatever and maintain a clean, healthy and thriving animal community

Ways to make it better...

My experience has always been positive

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Not enough money to reach out into the community as we'd like and not enough places to temporarily house the injured and sick animals (cats and kittens)

One thing I'd also say is that...

Getting involved with HART was the perfect opportunity for me when I retired. It's keeps me involved in my community, "forces" me to walk a mile or 2 a day, and makes me feel good knowing I'm doing something positive.
