National Forest Protection. State Forest Monitoring. Sustainable Communities promotion. Network support for upstart grassroots groups with lots of heart and little budget. A finger in virtually every import environmental fight from Missouri to Virginia, from Mississippi to the Great Lakes. No other organization does what Heartwood does. As a network of activists and grassroots organizations, Heartwood brings folks together twice yearly in some of the most beautiful areas in the entire central hardwoods and eastern regions to organize, stratigize, inform and enjoy. Heartwood is a link between small groups of people or individuals who would otherwise feel isolated in their work to protect the forests in their community. Heartwood helps these individuals/groups get the tool and information that they need to pursue their specific goals. They use the resources they have very efficiently.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
the people who we get to meet and work with on our common and individual goals.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
very dedicated. Most were not paid, and the ones who were paid, we not doing this work just to get a pay check.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
it could help a whole lot more people and groups and spend all of its time doing the work and none of its time fund raising to do the work.
Ways to make it better...
the group had more money to help pay the expenses of the volunteers so we didn't have to work extra at our "day jobs" to be able to be volunteers.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
how many areas are under threat and in need of our help.
One thing I'd also say is that...
it has been amazing how Heartwood has been able to find such a diverse experience and expertise pool over the past 20 years.
