I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to tour Ben Taub, LBJ, and Quentin Mease hospitals as well as several of the neighborhood clinics. Although the District (Harris Health) often serves as the medical provider of last resort, tending to some of the most challenging cases, I was impressed and inspired not only by the dedication and compassion of the medical personnel and administrative staff but also by the high quality of their services. The District is truly an unsung hero in our community. A tax supporter entity the District operates on a very lean budget. Amenities often taken for granted depend on outside coummunity support. I truly believe my contribution, as meager as unfortunately it was, was gratefully received and appreciated.

I am happy to donate to the Foundation because I know my donation goes to the cause of improving Diabetes care - not to overhead.

I was invited to tour Ben Taub and LBJ hospitals as a good will ambassador. I was so impressed with the facilities and the high level of care given to patients. HCHD trains the next generation of doctors at their facilities (hospitals and clinics) who then go on to care for patients across the country.

As an advisor to multiple Harris County Hospital District Foundation funding activities, I have the pleasure of seeing how the funds are directed specifically towards serving those who are in need, and the staff who serve those in need. Funding decisions are made prudently and responsibly, with great care to stretch every penny to serve as many who have needs as possible. I am proud to be part of a group of dedicated professionals and volunteers who take their responsibilities toward allocation of these funds very seriously. Donations to the Harris County Hospital District Foundation are a very worthy investment.

The Harris County Hospital District Foundation assisted our inpatient rehabilitation department by taking a once vacant outdoor space and transformed it into a beautiful horticultural therapy garden. The grant helped our department in purchasing the much needed therapeutic gardening equipment, shading for the garden, as well as for ongoing projects and seasonal plantings. The garden provides an outside location for patients to engage in a therapeutic activity, while incorporating all the same goals of increasing activity tolerance, standing tolerance, cognition, range of motion etc. normally addressed within the confines of a traditional gym or inpatient setting. The inpatient rehabilitation department at Quentin Mease Community Hospital is extremely grateful to the Harris County Hospital District Foundation for all their hard work and dedication in making our dreams a wonderful reality.

I am an occupational therapy assistant working on an inpatient psychiatric unit at Ben Taub Hospital. Personal grooming and hygiene are critical to our clients physical and emotional health. We offer our clients the opportunity to engage in personal care activities daily. Through the generousity of a grant from the Harris County Hospital Foundation, we have been able to secure the basic grooming supplies that a majority of our patients don't have access to. For many of them, this is the first time in days or weeks that they have been able to attend to grooming and appearance. It is such an honor to witness both the physical and spiritual transformation that occurs in addressing the simple self care activities most of us take for granted.

The Harris County Hospital District Foundation fosters innovation by supporting pilot programs within the Harris Health System such as the creation of the Horticultural Therapy Program at the Quentin Mease Community Hospital (https://www.harrishealth.org/en/news/pages/horticultural-therapy-garden.aspx) and the award-winning Healthy Harvest initiative( http://www.newswise.com/articles/harris-county-hospital-district-wins-prestigious-naph-award). Additionally, the foundation builds public-private partnerships on behalf of low-income, uninsured children. Just in the last 10 years, the Foundation has given more than $2.5 million to various children’s health projects in Harris County.

The Harris Health Foundation has been instrumental in changing lives - I work at the Neuro Psychiatric Center, Ben Taub Hospital, Occupational Therapy Department, and because the Foundation funded the Work Reintegration Program, to date, we have clients who are now gainfully employed, productive members of society. The Foundation has also funded and continues to fund other projects like the Self Care Group and the Cooking Group, which allows our clients to practice good hygiene and healthy eating / healthy meal preparation on a daily basis. Words are not enough to describe the impact that these projects have had on the lives of our clients. More Power to the Foundation and Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Michelle F. Phillips, OTR

Our Rehabilitation Department has received several small fund grants from HarrisHealth Foundation over the last few years. We could not have provided the service that we were able to if it wasn't for the assistance from the HarrisHealth Foundation. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Department at Quentin Mease and the Occupational Therapy Department at the Neuro Psychiatric Center (NPC) at Ben Taub are 2 recent examples. We were able to provide community re-integration outings to our Inpatients at Quentin Mease that will assist them in those skills prior to discharge fromm the hospital. We were also able to provide a work re-integration group; a cooking group and an activity of daily living group with the assistance from the Foundation for our patient at the NPC. These activities are extremely important to prepare the patients for discharge and community re-integration.Our department is grateful to the Foundation for all this assistance. The HarrisHealth Foundation has a great mission that they fullfil will the assistance in grants. Thank you HarrisHealth Foundation!
