I have been a member, board member, and volunteer for Hadassah for 36 years. My exposure to the organization began when I was a young child. I attended various activities in the Brooklyn, NY Kings Highway Chapter with my beloved maternal grandmother Gussie Langer Burstein of blessed memory. I loved reading her issues of Hadassah Magazine and connecting the information there with the events and meetings that I attended with her.

Fast forward to 1977, when I got married, joined Elana Chapter of White Plains, NY. I joined as an annual member and became a board member within the first month. From there I grew into various leadership positions. I became a Third Generation Life Member, a Keeper of the Gate and eventually a Founder. I made our daughter a Fourth Generation Life Member. They used to say that everything you learned you learned about it in kindergarten. I beg to differ with that statement and substitute "learned about it in Hadassah". While I was volunteering with this wonderful education, teaching and treatment organization, it was providing me with lifelong skills which I was able to parlay into paid employment after more than 25 years of child-rearing and eldercare.

No matter what project or position I take within the organization, I am always inspired by our accomplishments. Hadassah is the family of my heart. My Hadassah friends have become part of my extended family and support network. Because of all this, I have named Hadassah as the final beneficiary of my will. I hope to work for Hadassah for another 36 years.

Hadassah is my passion. Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, SAVES LIVES, SHELTERS CHILDREN, & ENSURES OUR JEWISH LEGACY.
Shortly before International AIDS Day, a 27-year-old woman and her husband announced that she was pregnant – and that the baby was free of the HIV
virus – thanks to AIDS Center at Jerusalem’s Hadassah University Medical Center.
Our Youth Aliyah programs shelter children and refugees. Just this fall we opened our kibbutzim to refugees from the fires in Northern Israel.
Young Judaea provides fabulous Israel programming for youth: Year Course is a "gap year" program for students who have just finished high school. Some credits are even transferrable! The Young Judaea summer programs are great-- my son went on a YJ summer program and hiked from the Kinnerret to the Mediterranean!
Hadassah also provides superb, pioneering leadership development for volunteers in American through online training, which has terrific carry-over to the professional world. We teach our volunteers how to develop new leaders, how to motivate volunteers, and how to cope with change, among other essential leadership skills.
Hadassah is going to be 100; Hadassah is a winner!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in many ways: the benefits my son has derived from Young Judaea programming; the benefits I've derived from leadership development; the friends and connections I've made around the world; the medical treatments I and my husband have received in Seattle, many of which were pioneered at Hadassah Medical Organization in Israel!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would make the National Board smaller and more visible to all our members. Their work is extraordinary.

Hadassah is amazing. Almost 100 years old but more relevant than ever. The chapters are supported by regional and national volunteer leaders who work together to bring Jewish education, social and cultural programs to their community. The leadership training and support is phenomenal. Members are valued and appreciated. I took a small job in my group 20+ years ago and have continued to volunteer on the local, regional and national level. It's such a great feeling to know what a difference our work is making in Israel and for everyone everywhere.

As the current National President of the Hadassah Associates, I know that Hadassah is a terrific organization. We are over 300,000 strong with great volunteers. The Associates work together, and in partnership, with the women of Hadassah. We support the efforts of Hadassah at all levels. Our stem cell research is world class.

Hadassah is a great organization. I was President of the Hadassah Associates and had a wonderful experience organizing the men to support the women of Hadassah. They run a large organization, supporting a truly advanced medical institution in Jerusalem, The Hadassah Medical Organization. Hadassah also supports the Hadassah College of Jerusalem, Youth Aliyah and the Young Judaea youth organization in the US. They are very transparent, providing full reporting on where the money goes. This is the only non-profit i know that turns over 90% of fund raising dollars to their recitpient organizations. Keep it up Hadassah.

My experience with this organization has been very positive. The national office has been candid with us and shown us how much of the funds are actually donated, and they have a good record and score in this regard. The fund-raising activities have been first rate, as the organization provides leadership training and programming ideas and resources. One comes away from a Hadassah event with not only more knowledge or understanding of an issue or subject, but also the good feeling of having contributed to a very worthwhile cause, medical advancement and services.

meeting wonderful people. The experience of working together to a common goal, receiving training together and bringing projects to successful closure was wonderful. I also really enjoyed the retreats, because the programming was always high quality.

Ways to make it better...

we could have recruited more volunteers. It always seems, as in other organizations, that a few people do most of the work. We had many other groups with which we competed for members and volunteers, and we were always trying to find new angles and hooks.

Nominated for a 2005 Nobel Peace Prize, Hadassah's HMO, Hadassah Medical Organization, is an oasis of peace in the Middle East, treating patients without regard to religion, race, ethnicity, or country of origin. Hadassah's advanced medical research is shared with the world; its medical teams respond to world catastrophes. Jewish and Arab doctors, nurses and medical specialists work side by side, are required to learn both Hebrew and Arabic, and treat victims of terror and terrorists, often side by side. I have been proud to be a volunteer leader of Hadassah for over 30 years and serve as Chapter President, VP Fundraising, Bulletin Editor, PR Chair, Advisor to another chapter, and sit on the Region Board. My close association with this extraordinary organization, that is also involved in education, youth institutions and land development in Israel as well as important advocacy work in the United States, has helped me fulfill my efforts towards using this portion of my life towards "tikkum olam," repair of the world. We are building for future generations both in the U.S. and Israel. Hadassah is truly extraordinary!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

life-saving medical and research procedures; practical educational programs that place graduates in careers that benefit Israeli society and themselves; programs that take troubled children and make them productive citizens; saving land and water reserves

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Reorganize the quota system for the chapters, basing it more on the nature of the members than their number.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the non-biased way that Hadassah offers its medical services, setting an example for peace in a troubled region; the ability to contribute my talents to raise money to continue Hadassah work into the future.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

dedicated women. When I first joined I was in awe of women who volunteered while raising families, working, belonging to synagogues, and being otherwise active in the community. I wanted to be like them and promised myself to give more when I could.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

endow chairs in medicine at Hadassah Medical Organiztion, fund vital research in stem cells and other new methods;help every troubled youth in Israel; expand its Hadassah College programs to even more fields and for more students

Ways to make it better...

the younger people in my chapter had not drifted away from Hadassah, leaving mostly elderly members who are no longer able to do the work. I wish that more people in my community would see the value of Hadassah and contribute in some way--time or money.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

continuing to raise the funds necessary to keep our hospitals, college, and youth programs running in a very difficult economy.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This organization has very few paid professionals and runs mostly with volunteers. That makes it an excellent value when contributing money because 92% of it goes to the programs, not staff.

Hadassah is no longer my grandmother's organization. Since my first social experience in 1970,I have become a better educated and more passionate supporter of Israel.I learned how to be a leader in my community and to articulate Hadassah's message of Healing, Teaching and Research all over the country.Hadassah is the only non-profit to ever receive a Nobel Peace Prize nomination (2005).I am impressed that Hadassah's National leadership began to re-organize before the economic downturn. And I am very proud to be part of the largest building project in Israel, the 14 story Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower at Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem. It will be their 100th anniversary gift to the people of Israel. My grandmother would be proud, too.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that over one million lives are touched every year and I was part of their positive experience.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

of the highest calibre. Hadassah attracts bright, curious, selfless volunteers and staff.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand its already considerable stem cell research and treatment.

I have been a Life Member of Hadassah for about 30 years. As we have moved around the country, Hadassah chapters have been a welcoming part of the Jewish community. The work Hadassah does here in developing leaders in women and our youth; advocating for Israel and women and children in Congress; and Jewish education; health education; pre-school groups and more is exceptional. Our work in Israel has developed two hospitals with a new clinical, state of the art tower under construction; medical and dental schools in conjunction with Hebrew University; Youth Aliyah villages now serving children at risk; Hadassah College Jerusalem growing and with new programs each year. Hadassah trains public health professionals from many other countries, and sends teams for worldwide disaster relief. Women internationally also work for Hadassah and gain so much in the process. Hadassah has helped the Israeli people since 2 nurses went to Palestine nearly one hundred years ago.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Many areas in the US and when visiting in Israel.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

All those who volunteer for Hadassah on the National level work very hard to achieve its goals.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Being part of helping Israel in such a visible way.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The staff is usually very helpful and both staff and volunteers are knowledgeable.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Easily meet salaries of employees at our projects in Israel and continue to expand as needed. Our annual budget is substantial so 10 million is not that large a number.

Ways to make it better...

Could not be better.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The current economic crisis.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Every Jewish woman who wants to support health and education in Israel should join and participate in Hadassah.
