Issues: Human Services, Seniors

Location: 2174 Old Sattler Rd Canyon Lake TX 78133 USA

Mission: Since our inception in 2004 we have increased our operations by three fold. We have not only met but have exceeded our goals. Our aging population has been served with a variety of essential compassionate services that they needed. We have built ramps for Seniors to provide safe access to their homes, repaired hazardous areas in and around their homes, provided enormous amounts of food to help with nutritional needs, and beautified their environment as well as the community?s. We consistently adjust our programs, operations and procedures to meet as many needs as possible. Our operation improves the quality of life of many Senior Citizens and eliminates other risks that could be devastating to their health and well being. The food we provide sustains most, if not all, of their nutritional needs. We continually adapt and adjust to the needs of our Seniors in order to keep them safe and healthy in their own homes. Our staff, volunteers and Board Members actively seek funding for our operations as well as provide their services to our organization. We constantly increase our volunteer database to keep up with the tremendous number of services requested by the Senior Citizens. Many local organizations and businesses steadily provide support in the form of donations and services. The growth in our senior population throughout the Canyon Lake and Comal County area will only increase the need for our services. Our programs have a reputation of being the best and most compassionate in the area. Due to the growth in the area Habitat for Safe Seniors must be prepared to meet the increased demand in services for the elderly. Unlike other specialized organizations that meet only a single need, Habitat for Safe Seniors is unique in that we have combined a variety of services under one roof.

Did you know that Rondah Savage, Executive Director, personally owns the property that Habitat for Safe Seniors is located on (2174 Old Sattler Rd) and pays herself $1k per month to lease the property to her nonprofit? Look up "Savage Rondah" at www.comalad.org (Comal Appraisal District) and see for yourself. You will also see that since Rondah Savage "founded" HFSS in 2004 the value of this property alone(her PERSONAL PROPERTY) has risen from $4,550 to a value of $245,000 in 2010! Not a bad investment for her. She personally owns 7 properties in addition to this property. Some have been purchased from the seniors she works with in her role as Executive Director. That's one way to get a good deal on property.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Although Rondah Savage, Executive Director of HFSS, has 8 properties in her name she acts as if she is the penniless, selfless, unpaid founder of a nonprofit who "does without" so she can "take care of her seniors". Drive by the property and see the multitude of military vehicles, storage lockers, concession trailers, tents, vehicles, etc. that have been purchased with HFSS funds that aren not used and have NOTHING to do with the mission of this organization.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

In Canyon Lake Views at www.canyonlakeviews.com, Rondah Savage was profiled in the December 2010 edition, page 4. In reference to being Executive Director of HFSS the article said, "Someday I hope it becomes my job" but so far she has had to depend on a separate source of funds for living expenses. This is FALSE! She paid herself QUITE WELL in 2010 until most of her funding was cut. She doesn't post the required IRS form 990's in an effort to hide this information from potential funders and the public.

I would like to thank all those that have written reviews positive or otherwise. I would like to clarify the review from senioradvocate. 1. We still operate all programs. We DO NOT have all the necessary supplies for our ramps or home repairs as stated. We do schedule our services when volunteers are AVAILABLE. 2. There are no reports of anyone/senior getting sick from food distributions. All food is accepted in "As is Condition" and how it is donated. Each client has the responsibility to check the items they received. 3. Our mission is clearly stated and served. 4. There are no "partners" and only trash is hauled off. Including any obvious spoilage. 5. All financial statements and 990's are filled out by an independent auditor outside of HSS and in accordance with all laws and regulations. Including any disclosures of property rentals. Please see page 10 of the 990 if you need further assistance for occupancy expenses. 6. Again I thank you for your comments and I'm sorry if you had a bad experience!

I currently manage the bookkeeping for this organization and help in all areas of programs as well. This organization does do a great job and all information is reported as required. I also understand that no organization can operate without having a facility to operate from. The Executive Director has dedicated her life and property to helping the senior citizens of this community and operates in full cooperation of all laws and regulations. The person making the negative comments obviously doesn't know enough about this organization and is aggrevated by something within themselves. God will forgive you!

Ways to make it better...

if the word and work of this organization was reviewed by people that know what they are talking about.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the lack of funders willing to help.

One thing I'd also say is that...

people should pay more attention and think positive. This is a great organization.
