HABITAT FOR SAFE SENIORS INC

Rating: 3.71 stars   7 reviews

Issues: Human Services, Seniors

Location: 2174 Old Sattler Rd Canyon Lake TX 78133 USA

Mission: Since our inception in 2004 we have increased our operations by three fold. We have not only met but have exceeded our goals. Our aging population has been served with a variety of essential compassionate services that they needed. We have built ramps for Seniors to provide safe access to their homes, repaired hazardous areas in and around their homes, provided enormous amounts of food to help with nutritional needs, and beautified their environment as well as the community?s. We consistently adjust our programs, operations and procedures to meet as many needs as possible. Our operation improves the quality of life of many Senior Citizens and eliminates other risks that could be devastating to their health and well being. The food we provide sustains most, if not all, of their nutritional needs. We continually adapt and adjust to the needs of our Seniors in order to keep them safe and healthy in their own homes. Our staff, volunteers and Board Members actively seek funding for our operations as well as provide their services to our organization. We constantly increase our volunteer database to keep up with the tremendous number of services requested by the Senior Citizens. Many local organizations and businesses steadily provide support in the form of donations and services. The growth in our senior population throughout the Canyon Lake and Comal County area will only increase the need for our services. Our programs have a reputation of being the best and most compassionate in the area. Due to the growth in the area Habitat for Safe Seniors must be prepared to meet the increased demand in services for the elderly. Unlike other specialized organizations that meet only a single need, Habitat for Safe Seniors is unique in that we have combined a variety of services under one roof.

I became associated with HSS 2 years ago. I find it to be a very constructive and ethical organization. They do what they say they are going to do and they don't do what they say they are not going to do. Plain and simple. I have seen seniors thrive on the physical and emotional support they receive there. I have been impressed by the loyalty and commitment of most staff and volunteers. Obviously, there are some bad apples in any bunch and they usually disappear just like the other produce that is no longer good quality.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have been fortunate to be asked to deliver food to needy families. The response is always overwhelmingly positive. I have alsoparticipated in a residence clean-up and trash haul-off. HSS is very responsible about taking away all debris from the job site

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give more credit to the directors, staff, and volunteers. Nothing they do is easy and the assistance they give is outstanding. They are professional, courteous, and efficient.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The feeling in my heart that people really care about the welfare of people they don't even know and are willing to put themselves out in order to help them.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

kind, helpful and well trained.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Build a storage facility and administration building and be able to pay more staff people to ensure greater efficincy and less waste, even though some waste is expected when dealing with perishables.

Ways to make it better...

I had more time and resources to donate to this wonderful organization!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The people who find it easier to confuse and criticise than to roll up their sleeves and get to work helping people.

One thing I'd also say is that...

It is not easy to create and run a non profit organization. One of the challenges is facing undeserved criticism and going on with the work anyway. The Executive Director and Board of Directors of HSS are humble and their work is very apppreciated.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every six months

I, my wife, and my children have volunteered for HSS almost since its inception. We have seen it grow from an empty lot to a thriving organization that helps hundreds of senior citizens and other needy families. The economy has definitely taken its toll on donations and available helpers. However, I still see many dedicated volunteers doing their best to serve this organization and the community.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing homebound seniors receive needed meals and groceries, as well as home repairs, trash haul-off, etc.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to find more donors and volunteers.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

working with other volunteers to help load food from the local Food Banks into the vehicles of needy families.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

outgoing, friendly and dedicated.

Ways to make it better...

we had more time and more help to get more things accomplished.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

an economy where people and corporations do not have spare time or money to continue to support these types of organizations.

One thing I'd also say is that...

my overall experience with HSS has been very positive. We have dedicated much of our lives to trying to help it succeed in delivering beneficial services to the needs of the Canyon Lake area.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

HFSS claims to have many programs in existence that they no longer operate. They do not offer repairs, clean-up, or ramp installations to seniors anymore. They have the supplies and volunteers but they no longer schedule these services.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

watching seniors become ill from the outdated food that is distributed.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Replace Executive Director with someone that would follow the mission of the organization. The Board of Directors does not direct the Executive Director nor do they follow what the organization is actually accomplishing.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Learning how not to run a nonprofit.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

good hearted. Most don't stay very long after they see how the organization is operating.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

follow its mission

Ways to make it better...

I had not seen all of the waste that occurs there. Food that cannot be distributed is thrown away. The "partner" of the Executive Director, who is the Director of the BoD, hauls the trash away so that no one knows the amount of food being discarded.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The Board of Directors and the Executive Director

One thing I'd also say is that...

The Executive Director, Rondah Savage, owns the property that she is leasing to HFSS. This is not disclosed on the 990 form. She also rents one of the buildings to a couple and is pocketing that money instead of paying HFSS. VERY corrupt organization.
