Causes: Homeless & Housing, Housing & Shelter, Housing Development, Construction & Management, Housing Rehabilitation

Mission: Habitat for humanity of orange county transforms lives and communities by helping families in need purchase or renovate their own homes

Programs: Habitat for humanity of orange county, headquartered in santa ana, ca, is dedicated to ending substandard housing and building strong communities in orange county. Habitat uses donations of land, funding, materials, professional services and volunteer labor to build simple, decent homes which are sold to qualified low-income families for a 1% down payment, closing costs, and a long-term mortgage. Mortgage payments are recycled to build more habitat homes. Habitat families contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" to the program by building their own home, helping another habitat family build a home, or working in some other area of the habitat organization. Habitat for humanity families and volunteers have built 185 homes and served 895 people in orange county since 1988. For more information, please visit www. Habitatoc. Org

Of all the organizations I could volunteer for, this one has my heart. HfHOC has built over 130 homes and has helped that many families get back on their feet and give them a new start in life. I think the biggest joy for me is to see the children's faces when they see their new home and see the pride in the parents. These homes are not a "gift"; the families work for them and pay mortgages, etc., but it is truly a step up for them.

Wonderful to volunteer for...the people that work here are very nice and supremely grateful for the help. The staff is minimal, encourages volunteers, so the money donated goes where it needs to go for those who need the housing. A very worthwhile charity. I also admire the restore. Recycling at its finest, the materials that can be reused are, and they prove "one man's trash is another man's treasure".
