Greyhound Adoption League of Texas, (GALT) is an amazing non profit organization that assists retired Greyhound racers in finding their forever home . This is where our story begins...
In the Summer of 2004 we went to our first GALT Meet and Greet. I knew one day I would adopt a Greyhound.
My husband and I began our search that Summer with GALT and it didn't take long until our soon to be adopted son, Mackie, was placed in his forever home with us.
During the Adoption process (which is extremely thorough - they contacted every reference to make sure we were going to make good parents) Mackie was brought to our home and felt comfortable enough to lie down in our home! We all knew at that time it was meant to be!
We unfortunately did not have a lot of time with our beautiful boy, as he became ill suddenly in the Summer of 2008 and we had to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge. We were obviously devistated and GALT's family and friends were there with us during this difficult time in our life.
Needless to say, we knew we couldn't "replace" Mackie, but three months later, we went looking again (our home was too empty) and our newest son, Sammy found us! Sammy has been with us now 2.5 years and we enjoy our every moment with him! He is truly a spoiled rotten retired racer and loving every minute of it!
Can't say enough wonderful things about GALT - they help to educate the public regarding the oportunity of adopting Greyhounds as a wonderful family addition. They maintain their visability in the community through many Meet and Greets, local events and fundraisers. (The costs that GALT incur are amazingly high with veterinary procedures and costs associated with transitioning retired racing greyhounds into permanent forever homes.) They go anywhere they are needed to deliver greyhounds to others to to pick up greyhounds that are looking for their forever homes.
Again, this is an amazing organization who doesn't know the words, "no" or "can't do" or "has no time"...The volunteers and board members need to know it's because of them our family is whole and happy once again.
Thank Roo from the bottom of my retired heart, Sammy

I researched different types of dogs when I decided to adopt. I decided on a Greyhound. I searched various local adoption agencies. I visited several events with different groups. I decided that GALT had the best care, screening, and placing of their adoptable dogs. They do great rescue work in the local area and they have a wonderful group of volunteers. My entire experience has been wonderful, and my new family member is a perfect fit thanks to the great coordinators and the care that he received upon being placed into the GALT organization.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

their screening of potential adopting families, their care in the adoption process and the foster families that help the animals transition.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would not change the organization, but set up this organization as a template for other rescue/adoption organizations to follow.

I first learned of GALT immediately following the news of the FWACC-28 case last July. I became more familiar with the organization through their website, enews, and Facebook posts. I cannot believe the wonderful work they do. Most greyhound rescues limit the hounds they take in to track racers, and most want only healthy dogs that can be turned over quickly. GALT takes in the most needy without bias - those whose lives are in danger from abuse or neglect, and those whose pedigree may be in question because they are either untattooed or not readable. The transformation of these animals once they come into GALT's hands and the way they thrive in their new environment is amazing. This group is certainly worthy of any non-profit award.

I gathered all the news I could find during the course of the FWACC-28 case and created a video to honor the rescued hounds and memorialize those that lost their lives. The video also commended those in GALT who worked so hard to care for the hounds.

I would not change a thing. The volunteers are dedicated to their volunteer work and to the hounds.

I was one of the first volunteers with GALT and I chose to volunteer with them because of their beliefs, compassion and mission. I am still just as impressed with GALT now as I was day one. They go above and beyond on the care they give the greyhounds regardless of the medical costs one may incur.

GALT is GREYT and I will be a supporter of theirs as long as we are all around!

The difference this organization makes in the life of just one dog is incredible. They take in dogs with the costliest of injuries and don't bat an eye on the expenses they will incur to save them and give them a second chance at a life they so deserve.

Can't think of anything except I know that GALT is continually trying make improvements when needed.

I don't know if I'm really permitted to write a review, but here goes. I'm the "house dog." I've trained countless foster dogs for GALT. i've helped teach them to walk nicely on a lead, to jump into the car, to enjoy yogurt and fruit and vegies, to run in after the dinner bathroom break so that we could be brushed and get the special treat of the day, to enjoy "treasure hunts" of kibble scattered around the house when my people leave.
Since I am always the bottom of the pack, it is most definitely my job to teach the foster houndies to play and romp. I've been through a lot of them. Some I miss more than others. What I know, though, is that we all get treated the same, so those fosters with GALT really get to learn about the good life of retirement.

I adopted my first greyhound, Cabby, from GALT in early 2008. Cabby and GALT changed my life forever. After seeing what wonderful creatures greyhounds were I jumped in with both feet, started fostering and now I have 6 GALT greys of my very own. I can honestly say my life revolves around greyhounds!

GALT never turns away a greyhound in need, no matter how bad off they are. I have fostered a few that came to GALT very Ill, GALT always goes the extra mile to make sure that each grey in its possession is given the best care for its individual needs. Not only does GALT take in retired racing greys, they also open their doors to greyhound mixes, owner releases, ex-coyote hunting greys and strays. I am very proud to be a member of GALT and am sure to tell everyone I can about the fantastic work they do and how wonderful greyhounds are as pets!

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

Volunteering for GALT spurred the creation of my own business making products that are specifically for greyhounds including martingale collars, leashes and greyhound christmas stockings. I vend at some of GALTs events. I also voulnteer my time to make GALT's bellybands that they sell in the online store and include in all male greyhound adoption packets. I have met many many wonderful friends though GALT and so often they feel more like family to me.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Wonderful, I love greyhounds more than I can ever convey in writing

GALT is one of the most amazing rescue groups I have ever come in contact with. They NEVER say no to any hound, be it abused, broken limbs, or lost and found. They have an outstanding bunch of volunteers as well as vets who take the best care of everything that comes their way. Superior care and concern in what they do so well.

GALT has shown it commitment to retired racing greyhounds through its actions. Its mandates to aid all greyhounds is admirable. GALT has shown over the years, that money is secondary to the well-being and health of a retired racing greyhound. Each and every greyhound receives the highest level of care regardless of its situation. For this GALT should be proud and duly recognized for its efforts.

GALT made our family complete with the addition of a hound. They all work so hard to keep the pups in good shape and going to good homes. If our house ever starts to feel a little too roomy we will add another GALT hound in a minute. Thanks to them for all their hard work!

I have such admiration and respect for GALT. This organization takes in greyhounds who need extensive medical care and they do it again and again, no matter the circumstances. Everything from one stray at a time, to whole groups of dogs taken from a hoarding situation. The fact is that volunteers, space, time and money are all stretched extremely thin when a group goes above and beyond this way. GALT deserve to be recognized as the amazing greyhound rescue group they are. They have saved so many greyhound lives and they adamately refuse to give up on even one of them. They are like angels to greyhounds in need.

By seeing the dogs who are saved, by GALT and seeing the dogs after they have been rehabilitated by GALT. Amazing.
