Grey2K USA

Rating: 4.08 stars   313 reviews

Address:

P.O. Box F Arlington MA 02476 USA

Mission:

Formed in March of 2001, GREY2K USA Worldwide is the largest greyhound protection organization in the United States and now works internationally. As a non-profit 501(c)4 organization, we work to pass stronger greyhound protection laws and to end the cruelty of dog racing on both national and international levels. We also promote the rescue and adoption of ex-racers across the globe.

Results:

We have written and passed bills making dog racing illegal in the states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Colorado. When we first began our campaign, there were 49 tracks in 15 states and now there are just 21 in seven states. Additionally, we have worked to block the expansion of dog racing to countries such as Jamaica, the Philippines and South Africa. Our research has led to the exposure of hundreds of media documented cases of greyhound cruelty and neglect, including dogs testing positive for cocaine, dogs suffering terrible injuries and dogs experiencing severe neglect at racing kennels both here and abroad. See more at http://www.grey2kusa.org/action/states.html and http://www.grey2kusa.org/who/victories.html

Direct beneficiaries per year:

by passing a bill to make Colorado the 39th state to ban dog racing

Programs:

We document the cruelty of dog racing and use our research to pass greyhound protection laws with the goal of ending dog racing worldwide. We also promote the adoption of ex-racers worldwide. Read more at http://www.grey2kusa.org/who/index.html

I didn't know much about greyhound racing when we adopted our first greyhound more than 3 years ago - I could have easily been swayed either way. I've never been to nor bet on a greyhound race and have no desire to do so. Anyway, it didn't take long to see Grey2k's underhanded tactics though. First, there was a photo of poor pitiful greyhound in a tiny cage, lying on a bare floor, leaning up against the side. But then I came across the original *uncropped* photo showing a huge crate with lots of bedding. That part was conveniently cropped out. And then they've stolen greyhound photos from Facebook accounts without the photographers permission to use in their literature. I know this to be a FACT - I'm friends with one of these photographers and saw the brochure one of her photos was used in. If they have to stoop to deceptive practices to make their point, they are not trustworthy enough to believe anything they have to say.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Be honest; don't twist things to suit your agenda. Don't steal people's property (photos) without their permission, and don't manipulate photos in a way that's deceptive of the truth.

This is yet another "comment" that is part of an organized campaign by greyhound breeders to (unsuccessfully) drive down our review score here. Our research is based on credible data such as state records, mainstream news reports, or the industry itself. People can look at the cited data and make up their own mind about whether greyhound is cruel and inhumane. Based on the last decade, it's pretty clear that the standard practices used in the commercial dog racing industry go against our mainstream values. As someone who has rescued greyhounds for almost two decades now, I can't begin to tell you how important the work of Grey2K really is. Making changes legislatively is the only way things will ever get done to stop the abuse and exploitation of the most gentle breed of dog there is. They don't deserve to live a life where their life is put in danger every time the step on a track. That's the reality. No matter how clean one kennel may be, or how well maintained one breeding farm is, there are too many others that would make the average person sick to their stomach. But even if they were all as good as the misinformed like to believe, their will never be any way to justify the deaths that can and do occur at the tracks, the kennels, and the breeding farms, just so someone can place a cheap bet. It's time for all to get with the program and understand that in the year 2015 all lives matter and greyhound racing should become a barbaric part of our past.

I followed Grey2k on Facebook for a few years, and bought into the whole "greyhound racing is cruel" deal. That is until I began following a few other groups, and began conversing with people in greyhound racing. Through that association I was able to visit a greyhound breeding farm in north Florida, and visit four different racing kennels. I realize now that Grey2k is all about lies and propaganda. These animals are loved and treated very well by their breeders, owners and trainers. Grey2k is all about generating donations from people who don't do the research on their own.

Grey2K does nothing for the greyhounds. Grey2K is against the Smith Greyhound Safety Bill in Florida. This bill would require injury reporting, have the tracks install a breakaway lure and cover the live rail to help stop greyhounds from getting electrocuted.

Now grey2K will come on here tell you that the track at Palm Beach has installed the covering on the rail and a dog still got electrocuted there and that is true. However, instead of donating money to try and find a way to cover the rail in a spot that was still exposed, Grey2K wants to leave the whole rail exposed so anywhere on the track that a dog or person might come in contact with the rail will get electrocuted.

When I said person I wasn't kidding. A worker at the Woodlands track in Kansas dropped a tool on the other side of the rail and as he reached over he touched the live part of the rail and was electrocuted.

Grey2K may tell you they didn't know about the worker, but they do because I have mentioned it before on forums they read.

So don't you have to wonder why a group that tells you they are all about protecting the greyhounds, doesn't?

As a follow up to Carey's post

Carey that isn't what you said in this article.

http://wlrn.org/post/competing-greyhound-racing-bills-filed-tallahassee

But executive director Carey Theil of the Boston-based non-profit Grey2K USA, promoting greyhound protection, says the Greyhound Safety Act Cory is backing is not the way to go. Theil's organization supports Senate Bill 2 and greyhound injury reporting in general.

It's like you supported Rep. Young's bill that was for expanded gambling and casinos in Florida, but in Massachusetts you are aligned with Repeal the Casino Deal.

This "review" was posted by a well-known greyhound breeder, as part of an organized campaign to lower our review score on GreatNonprofits. His claim that oppose the Florida "Greyhound Safety Act" is nonsense. This measure was filed this year by Senator Chris Smith and Representative Kevin Rader. Here is the thank you note that Representative Rader sent GREY2K USA a few weeks ago, thanking us for our support of his bill: http://grey2kusa.org/pdf/Rep.%20Rader%20Version1.pdf

Grey2k takes the bad and makes it the norm. While bad people exist in every segment of society they are not the norm.

Grey2K preys on your emotions to get donations, donations that do nothing to help greyhound adoption.

Don't be fooled by them, check them out and you will see.

This is such a worthy organization, helping to save the greyhounds who have lived terrible lives for entertainment, and now are getting help from this wonderful relief organization. It is time to end this cruel form of animal abuse.

Courtney, you are so right! Greyhound racing is a relic of past ideas and times when greyhounds were raised, used and killed as mere commodities. Together, we can end this cruelty! Christine Dorchak, Esq. President, GREY2K USA Worldwide

GREY2K USA is awesome! They tirelessly work to stamp out legal animal abuse in the form of greyhound racing. I have attended one of their track protests as a participant and it was well carried out, respectful all all rules and regulations. They have helped get racing outlawed in several states. Christine is a real person and shares the good and the bad with all of us who love the dogs and hope to see the time come when the scourge of greyhound racing is finally wiped from the face of the USA and the world.

I have always wanted a greyhound when I retired. But I'm also involved with rescuing cats. At the moment, I have too many cats to bring in a greyhound. I've loved the dogs and Christine of Grey2K - USA - worldwide has brought so much awareness to the plight of these wonderful dogs. I fully support Grey2K - USA in any way I can. They are wonderful voice for the dogs who, without Grey2K would have no voice. The Greyhounds deserve to be heard. And I will get my rescued greyhound one day. And he will be loved and totally spoiled.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Ensure they were heard and LISTENED to.

Back in the 1990s, I met Carey Theil and his greyt mother Connie when the Multnomah greyhound park in Oregon, was abusing greyhounds! Carey was involved way back then and later he and Christine formed the wonderful Group GREY2K USA! I know their work is sincere and they have accomplished much for the plight of the racing greyhounds everywhere! We know because we are the Greyhound Rescue of Idaho (22 years old this year ) and we have worked on the other spectrum of adopting these dogs into loving homes. The group Grey2K USA, in our eyes, is OUTSTANDING in their endeavors to help save the dogs and make the world a safer better place for Greyhounds!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Clone them all over the world:)

A little background on the president of Grey2k USA.

http://greyhoundwatchusa.blogspot.com/2014/02/leading-grey2k-charge.html

Actually, it's very relevant. This is not nonsense. These are facts about the president of Grey2k USA. Christine Dorchak lies about her train "accident" to tug at the heartstrings of potential Grey2k USA donors. Dorchak was never "run down by two speeding trains". Dorchak, as court documents detail, jumped in front of a slow moving Light Rail Vehicle. She sued the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, but the jury found that Dorchak was trespassing on MBTA property. Dorchak lies about this incident, and lies about greyhound racing.
