Our mission is to eliminate hunger and develop collaborative strategies that encourage self-reliance; its ultimate vision is to build a community that makes food accessible to all people while promoting dignity, wellness, and improvement in the quality of life.


Today the Food Bank distributes nearly 20 million pounds of food annually to agencies that serve individuals and families who need food assistance Operating from an award-winning LEED certified "Green" warehouse, located in Duquesne, PA, we accomplish our mission by re-packaging food, preparing orders for agencies, receiving, deliveries, pick-ups, maintaining a fleet of trucks and other vehicles, accounting and tracking, Food Stamp outreach, visiting and monitoring agencies, special events planning, development activities, nutrition education, a test kitchen, volunteer projects, publications, and tours. We have professional staff, new technology, nutrition research, improved communication, a strong member network, and thousands of dedicated volunteers. Together these elements enable us to develop specific programs that are both innovative and responsive to changing needs in the community. The Food Bank has won awards for programs, including:  a handheld wireless tracking system by which truck drivers can directly connect with inventory  an advocacy campaign using paper plates  the Choose Healthy Options Program (CHOP)

Target demographics:

We distribute food through agencies such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, after school programs, senior high rises, MH-MR drop-in centers, neighborhood food assistance agencies, emergency or disaster-related feeding sites, regional food banks, Meals on Wheels, community centers, and special programs.

During Fiscal Year 2007-08, more than 1,320,000 pounds of perishable products and some non-perishable products, (including bread, juice, dairy, meat, produce, cleaning supplies, etc) have been distributed to approximately 33,618 households, serving 79,205 people. Produce to People is held once a month in McKeesport, South Side, Braddock, and Homewood.

Due to the success of the program and the positive feedback from its participants, distributions were established this year in Beaver, Lawrence, and Greene Counties, and a handbook was developed that can be used as a guide for establishing future sites. We continue to explore the feasibility of adding more sites as the need and supply of product warrants.  The budget is approx. $2,600 per distribution.

I am aclient of one of the local pantries served by Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and have had only positive experiences with it in the last 5 years that I have used it. I am also a volunteer at my local pantry for the last 3 years. The food I receive is good and nutricious and goes a long way in extending my food budget. Every volunteer and employee I've met has been wonderful and extremely helpful.
