I heard that Grace had a shih-tzu available for adoption. While I was not planning to get another dog at this time, when I learned she was disabled I felt compelled to meet her. I fell in love with her and I really felt like I could provide her the home and love that she needed. I was pleased to learn that several people had asked to adopt her and they were turned down. Grace understood that she needed a home that could provide her with extra care and expertise. I used to be a vet tech, and I also have a disabled cat. I was pleased to see the questions on their adoption application. They understand that not everyone should be allowed to adopt a pet. She is now part of our family and brings us so much joy. Grace saved her from euthanasia. They understood that just because she was special needs didn't mean that there wasn't a place for her in this world.

The mission of the Grace Foundation is not only as an equine rescue, but also rehabilitation and therapy provider for youth. Additionally, the organization rescues another animals slated for euthanasia or slaughter, rehabilitates them, and places them in loving homes. The Director, Beth, will go to what some made consider "extreme" measures to save animals. In the past couple of years, other organizations have folded and their programs became part of the Grace Foundation. If anything, Grace is a constantly evolving, growing organization that never forgets its roots: horses and children and the relationship between them.

Anyone who goes out the 600-acre facility leaves a changed person. With more than 100 horses, and a team of passionate, mostly unpaid staff, any volunteer can tell it's love and hope that allows the organization to push through the rough times and thrive.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

In 2011, the Grace Foundation saved the lives of more than 200 animals. I've seen children from cities come and experience nature for the first time. I've witnessed horses and dogs go through total physical and mental transformations. I've seen mentally and physically disabled children, autistic children, impoverished children all embrace the unjudging presence and magnificence of horses (who would not be alive to do so without the organization's support).

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

With each horse costing $100 per month for feed and care, with a multitude of kittens and puppies that need spaying/neutering, and with 600 acres of property to maintain, money goes fast. The organization needs a more aggressive grant and fundraising program to continue successfully supporting all of the programs and services offered. The other thing I would work on would be organization, streamlining, and implementing processes. The organization needs a full-time office manager.

Would you volunteer for this group again?

For the time you spent, how much of an impact did you feel your work or activity had?

A lot

Did the organization use your time wisely?

Quite well

Would you recommend this group to a friend?

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

Initially, I would like to see better volunteer opportunity management. By that, as a volunteer you know what your skills are, and the organization might have a piece of paper that list what your skills are, but there needs to be a more direct, timely link between volunteer skills and volunteer opportunities to best utilize each person's time and talent.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

I've met knew people, found a place to de-stress, and found an opportunity to become part of an organization for the rest of my lifetime.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Fabulous, relaxed, more in touch with nature, and like I'm making a difference.
