When I came to Gracenter, I was having great difficulty staying sober. My life had become incredibly small. I remember the day I interviewed for admittance. The "Gracettes" stood outside the door of the room I was in an cheered me on, asking if I was going to become one of them. Although the prospect of leaving the outside world and going into a 6 month program was scary, the bright faces peeing through the small glass window wanting me to join, made me feel great hope. Hope was not something I had experienced in a while and it was something that I was to learn a great deal about during my time at Gracenter.

Gracenter taught me about myself and my role and responsibilty in my community. I learned how to work through problems and challenges. I also learned how to be still, to not have to react and how to be patient and wait for more information so I could make informed decisions. I learned how to build relationships with women and how to be a better friend, employee and relative. I learned about my feelings, the ones that kept me in my addiction and the ones that would drive me back to it if I did not make changes. All of these tools, the safe environment and the caring support of the Sisters, staff and fellow Gracettes gave me an opportunity that, had I not been fortunate enough to find, I might not still be alive and sober today.

I remember thinking initially that 6 months seemed like a lifetime to commit to a women's program. But what those 6 month gave me was and is just that - a lifetime.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would keep the program as it was when I went there in 1997/98. Changes I might make to the organization? Ongoing Alumni participation as part of exit plan.

Tell your story here and help others understand this charity Spending 6 months at Good Shepherd Gracenter was one of the best things I've ever done in my life. The classes I participated in and the therapy I received made it possible for me to make the positive changes I needed to make in order to live a healthy and productive life. With almost 2 years clean & sober now, I still use the things I learned at the Gracenter in my day to day life.

My experience at the Gracenter was life changing. Their focus was on treating the whole person, integrating the spirit, mind and physical body. In addition to classes, I received individual and group therapy by a an experienced professional psychologist. As a group, the clients learned how to coexist in a small household and work together to achieve peace and harmony. We attended 12 step meetings regularly and participated in yoga and meditation. The Gracenter saved my life and I would do anything to help support them as an organization.
