Mission: The purpose of this charitable organization is to provide care in the form of shelter, food, medical care and a home for cats that are in need. It is an additional “chance” for both disposed cats and cats scheduled for euthanasia by public shelters. The ultimate goal is to find a home for the cats and to place them with people (adoptive families). We will accept any cat whether it is adoptable or inadaptable and believe strongly with the “no kill” philosophy - which means that some cats will be a long term project. New families for the cats are carefully screened and have to go through a qualification process. We strongly believe and have set this shelter up as an environment where cats have the ability to roam and play and be outdoors. This promotes interaction with other cats, nature, and exercise and allows the cat to be healthier and happier.

Goathouse Refuge is a cage-free sanctuary that's doing great work for homeless animals. Please consider helping their program through volunteering, donations of supplies or funds, or by adopting one of their healthy and loving cats.

I began volunteering at the Goathouse in 2009. Even though I do not live in Pittsboro, and it is an hour's drive for me, I fell in love with the refuge from my first visit, and wanted to be a part of such a beautiful place. The Goathouse is cage-free--that does not mean that cats are not sometimes crated, but only temporarily for medical treatment or when they first arrive. They have 3 acres of securely fenced-in land to roam, a good diet w/supplements, daily medical care, and a clean and comfortable shelter building. There is a full-time staff, and a group of dedicated volunteers to ensure the well-being of the cats. The founder of the Goathouse, Siglinda Scarpa, is extremely attentive to the needs of the cats, and has a wealth of knowledge about cat health. Although the goal is to find loving homes for all of the cats, there are some that are not socialized enough, or are too old, or have medical issues, that may prevent them from being adopted. These cats will always have a safe and comfortable home at the Goathouse.

I started visiting Goathouse recently, and have been very impressed with their dedication to the many rescued cats they have taken in. Many were taken from kill-shelters when there time was up, and given a second chance in a loving environment. Goathouse Refuge cares for the physical and emotional needs of these animals, and makes the most of the resources they are given.
