Mission: Global Girl Media (GGM) nurtures the voice and self-expression of teenage girls in under-served and marginalized communities by training them to become citizen journalists, harnessing the power of new digital media to inspire self-esteem, community activism and social change. By linking young women internationally with seasoned reporters, educators and filmmakers and pairing US communities with international cities to create a peer-to-peer international network of girls, GGM empowers girls to make media that matters, improves media literacy, and encourages the promotion of healthier media messages about girls and women.
Results: Here’s what some of the GlobalGirl Reporters had to say about their experience:
“GlobalGirl changed my life, it made me feel like I was important.”
“Holding the camera was like holding the future in my hands…”
“We’ve not only become sisters, but advocates for our community…”
“I learned how to use my cell phone for change, not just to text about personal girl things…it gave me a sense of the power of media and myself”
We have seen the power of media and its exponential effect from our work in South Africa, Morocco and L.A. For each student, we can say that they impact their community in incremental ways:
1) Immediate: each girl becomes a role model in her household and community, reaching 10-100 additional people at home and in school, by her mere presence with a camera, her engaging in current affairs, questioning her surroundings.
2) Indirect: The impact the training has on each girl’s life and how she carries her newfound voice into her studies and work influences her educational and emotional future, as well as those of her siblings, friends, and followers.
3) Globally: The reports the girls produce have the potential to reach millions via internet and cellphone distribution.

The best experience of my life so far! Global Girl Media not only prepares you to be one of the top journalist in the rising world but it opened so many new doors for me. I received opportunities that I never thought would happen to me. I am a graduate of the first class from inner city Los Angeles. I always knew I wanted to work towards global female empowerment and Global Girl Media definitely provided me with all the skills needed to express my voice. I got the opportunity to interview key women leaders in this world like Ambassador at Large for Women's issues, Melanne Verveer in Washington, DC alongside Tebogo Tsotetsi, also a Global Girl Media Reporter from South Africa. It opened new doors like being a Teen Advisor for the United Nations Foundation Girl Up campaign and taking part in Running Start's Young Women's Political Leadership Program where I have recently been awarded the 2012 Woman to Watch alongside with former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. If you want to invest in a girl and make female empowerment a reality, GLOBAL GIRL MEDIA is the way to do so! Thank you Global Girl Media for providing me with the necessary skills and mentoring I needed to thrive as a young woman. I can now use my voice for great causes.
