Write, eat good food, write some more, and go home knowing something new about a new genre of writing. I especially enjoyed the playwriting workshop, because it was relaxed and fun.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I now read in front of large groups of people - ONLY because of Girls Write Now - in school I would never do it.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

explore more than one genre at a time.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

My mentor!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

friendly and very responsible, keeping everyone up to date on things.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

buy its own building.

Ways to make it better...

the workshops weren't so long.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the readings

One thing I'd also say is that...

You would probably enjoy Girls Write Now even if you didn't enjoy writing that much.

I am a new mentor and look forward to meeting my mentee and working with her. So far, Girls Write Now has proved to be a very compassionate organization dedicated to the welfare of all concerns, and to developing the writing potential of the girls. It has well-structured and diverse programs, and a great support team. The staff and volunteers are terrific and the energy and inspiration they exude is infectious.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

providing the tools and support necessary to help mentor the girls in developing their creative writing ability.

I've been shooting the readings and events for this organization for 5 years. It's one of only two organizations that I feel strongly enough, and that the work is valuable enough, that I continually feel inspired to stay involved. When I'm shooting video for them, I'm seeing the results of their work clear as day though the lens of my camera, and how much the experience matters to the girls as they read their stories and poetry.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Well, me personally, I'm not sure how I would do it, but again, it's just upsetting to see how tired the staff looks at events; often having stayed up all night the night before.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

watching the emotion in the girls faces as they read their writings, and the glow that they walk away with.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

tremendously dedicated, they work their asses off.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

afford to hire more support staff, and most importantly the program could reach more girls!!

Ways to make it better...

they had better computer support; it's been like trying to hold computers together with spit and tape at times. Which is tremendously frustrating to fight with. But it's what they've got, so not their fault.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Financial stability/sustainability, a larger full time support staff, and in the biggest sense, spreading it's model for supporting adolescent girls to a much larger group.

Girls Write now is one of the most inspiring organizations I know. The services they offer are both professional and nurturing. I have been impressed by the leadership and the volunteers, and feel that this organization deserves the highest accolades.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Transform the way we think about volunteerism in this country and inspire a whole lot of girls to express themselves and exceed their own expectations.

Last year, I went to a GWN reading. It was truly inspirational to see the relationships and unbounded talent that was cultivated. Both mentors and mentees appear to gain so much from the experience!

Many times it is a necessary bi-product that non-profits become insular and very tight-knit families. Girls Write Now however has achieved the best of both worlds, in one fell swoop they not only purport their support of each other but are also incredibly open and enthusiastic with newcomers and people who are unaffiliated. I had the pleasure of attending a fundraising event that was not only enjoyable but portrayed the spirit of Girls Write Now. I look forward to attending more events and involvement with this incredible non-profit!

Last year I attended the Winter Reading at Girls Write Now and I was blown away. I did not know what to expect from it, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of work and the sense of comradery between the mentors and the students. They really seemed like they developed a great relationship with each other and it was nice to see how welcoming the environment was for young writers. I got a sense from the winter reading that Girls Write Now was really accomplishing something notable and good and was creating confident writers out of young woman who might now have had the courage to express themselves otherwise.

Being a part of Girls Write Now has been a life changing experience. I like to say that GWN is the one part of my life that keeps me grounded - that makes me feel like I am really giving something back to the community I grew up in. I have always been passionate about writing, and it is incredibly rewarding to be surrounded by so many talented women and girls who share that passion. As much as my role as a mentor is about providing guidance, support and inspiration to my "mentee," I have to say I learn just as much - if not more - from her as she does from me. It is one of the most cherished relationships in my life. I am so proud to be a part of a local organization that serves local girls. Too often, students in the New York City public school system do not get the attention or education they need to thrive as adults. That's where GWN comes in. It's a fantastic forum in which these amazingly talented girls can find and share their voices. I truly hope that we can expand our resources and establish places for all applicants who apply to the program. I think everyone who wants to should have the opportunity to be a part of this organization. I simply cannot imagine my life without Girls Write Now.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

writing more creatively, and inspiring my mentee to pursue a career in writing. On our final session before summer break last year, my mentee - who had always wanted to be a lawyer - told me she wanted to be a journalist. My heart sang!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Is the community of passionate women writers who support me and help me be better at what I love to do.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Dedicated beyond belief. It is so inspiring to see what they have created, and to witness first-hand they way GWN volunteers have literally changed young girls' lives.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Reach ALL the under-served girls in America - from New York City to Los Angeles! GWN has had so much influence in NYC, and could do amazing things on a national scale. If we had 10 million bucks, we could create local chapters across the country.

Girls Write Now defines the idea of a "great nonprofit." Little did I know when I joined in 2006 that I would find my life changed as much as the girls I had hoped to help. I have volunteered in every capacity with this organization, and can personally attest that the staff and volunteers of this organization are the hardest working, most brilliant women I have had the honor to meet. The girls -- well, they're strength, talent, and honesty takes my breath away. I have found the experience of working as part of Girls Write Now continually inspirational in both my professional and personal lives. Through this organization, I have found the strength and confidence to be a better writer, a better teacher, and a better friend.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Feeling a part of a community: A real-life, vibrant community in every sense of the word.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

TREMENDOUS!! Dedicated, hard-working, and largely sleep deprived. I've never met a group of more inspiring individuals

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Open centers in all boroughs to serve the hundreds of girls who need help; then build centers in several US cities, to spread the mission, and the positive work of Girls Write Now.
