Mission: Girls Write Now Inc. (GWN) is New York’s premier creative writing and mentoring non-profit organization, matching bright, creative teenage girls from the city’s public high schools with professional women writers in the community since 1998. Through weekly one-to-one mentoring, monthly group genre-based workshops, and a five-part public reading series, their mission is to provide a safe and supportive environment where underserved or at-risk high school girls can expand their natural writing talents, develop independent voices, and build confidence in making healthy choices in school, career and life. The organization has recently been featured in The New York Times and on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. Girls Write Now has been distinguished by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities as one of the top arts- and humanities-based programs in the country serving youth beyond the school hours. I truly wish I had this organization in my life when I was in high school. Girls Write Now is a powerful, necessary program that is changing lives one word at a time.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

connecting with other professional women writers.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Seeing young women speak out about the issues that are important to them.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Established in their writing careers and not only had craft and skill to offer the girls, but they really cared and went out of their way to build strong relationships with young women.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Serve more female students, publish student work, provide literary scholarships for students are excelling in the program.

This is a wonderful organization that has had a positive impact upon many young women. I would volunteer as a mentor for this organization if I were eligible.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

fully committted to the organization's mission statement. Their dedication is evident in the amount of time each writer spends with each mentee. They have helped many young women develop a voice.

I mentored with Girls Write Now for three years and still have a relationship with my former mentees. Girls Write Now provided an amazing, supportive atmosphere to foster female friendships and creativity. It enriched my life and if I hadn't moved out of New York, I would still be involved. Thank you for everything!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

talented, interesting, and dynamic. One of my best friends is a woman I met while volunteering at Girls Write Now, and my "little sister" for life was my first mentee.

I've been a mentor with Girls Write Now for 3 years and love being part of such a smart, fun-loving, enthusiastic group of writers. The mentors are an inspiring group of professional writers, editors, and educators who find time in their busy lives to help show at-risk, aspiring teenage writers that they too can become published writers, eloquent speakers, and accomplished women. Many of the mentees are shy and unsure of their abilities in the beginning of the season, and yet at the end of the season are reading their poems, stories, even singing orginal verse! at public venues in New York City. The bravery of these teenage girls in inspiring, their bravery is fostered by the mentors--this is a true group effort at improving our community at a grassroots level and not letting girls go unnoticed.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My mentee's exposure to several genres of writing encouraged her to pursue a journalism degree in college. She has had the opportunity to read her work at popular New York City venues and has published her writing in Girls Write Now's publications.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Watching the girls grow in confidence and techique. Being a part of a group that makes a noticable difference in our city. Proving that women can be role models for each other.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Extremly devoted, hard-working, put the organization's needs before their own, really fun to be around, always trying to improve themselves and the program.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the way girls across the country and the world perceive themselves and their future. Point girls in the direction of being bigger than the environment they grew up in, improving their cirumstances and their future.

Writing can be a solitary passion, but each season GWN offers its members a warm, rigorous and vibrant community of women writers, which encourages individual creativity and growth. Being a part of GWN is life-changing, for mentors and mentees alike. The program is so thoughtfully designed and well-administered, the staff makes it look easy, though of course it is anything but!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

have its own dedicated space with ample room to grow, expand nationwide and offer all young female literary talents the support and inspiration they need to realize their potential

I've mentored with Girls Write Now for a year now, and it's been one of the best experiences of my life. The program is so encouraging, and the girls gain so much self-confidence in their writing. I still can't believe that 100% of GWN alumnae go on to attend college -- that alone should speak to the power of the GWN community! My mentee and I are very close and continued to work together on her writing even in the summer "off-season," and look forward to working together again next year.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

becoming close with my mentee and seeing real progress in her writing, like going from a C to an A on a paper that we re-wrote together.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

give it more money!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

becoming close with my mentee and seeing her build confidence and writing skills.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

extremely intelligent, confident, and candid.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

give even more NYC girls the opportunity to nurture their writing skills and go on to college!

Ways to make it better...

I felt like there were enough resources for more girls to have access to this kind of opportunity.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

trying to grow on limited resources.

One thing I'd also say is that...

It's unfortunate how much time GWN staff (And mentors!) spend trying to raise money. I wish the government would subsidize this program. It's definitely worth it for the future of NYC students.

I just started mentoring for GWN and am blown away by the incredible women I've already met through the program. It's seamlessly organized without feeling corporate, and incredibly inspirational without feeling too rah rah. I'm so pleased and honored to be a part of something so special.

I'm a new mentor with Girls Write Now this year... After an engaging orientation program last week, I'm eager to start working with such intelligent and creative women to help cultivate teenage girls' love of writing. The orientation program was extremely well organized. I can only imagine what the rest of the year will offer.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the passion and enthisiasm of staff and volunteers.

I have been involved with GWN for three years (two as a mentor), and it has been one the most fulfilling experiences. The group of mentors and mentees is more impressive every year, and I am inspired by the girls, who are talented and driven, to become a better writer and a better person. The pair sessions are great ways to nurture the pair relationship while working on writing and overall issues that the girls face (college, self-esteem, etc), and the monthly workshops bring together all of the pairs (I challenge anyone to say they are not inspired after these). Not only are we helping girls, but we are creating a community for like-minded ladies to come together.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

being both a mentor and a member of the program committee.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

helping shape young girls' futures by giving them the tools and the self-esteem they need to progress, and meeting amazing women who I now count among my closest friends.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

friendly and helpful.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Finally expand to include all the mentors and mentees on our waitlist, hire the staff it needs to run, and get a larger space.
