Girls Inc has been a wonderful opportunity that I feel so grateful to be a part of. I volunteer as a mentor, and we go monthly to the same school, teaching lessons on empowerment to disadvantaged middle school girls. The staff is friendly, approachable, determined, and organized. The fellow mentors are incredible people who share a common belief. This has been the best volunteer experience of my life, and I've loved being a part of the organization!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the girls themselves give such positive feedback and that is the most important thing. We can feel like we've done a good job, but when the girls say they loving coming to our programs, and are really engaged in participating, that shows me that the results are paying off.

do nothing! I've loved the experience.
I worked with Girls Inc in the summer of 2010 and it was a phenomenal experience. Their team was incredibly organized and energetic and motivated by the Girls Inc mission. They had a wonderful training program for volunteers and I felt that I got just as much out of the experience as I was able to provide for the students. I would absolutely volunteer with Girls Inc again if given the opportunity!

give them lots of money! They are a fantastic organization and do wonderful things for young women.
I had the wonderful opportunity to do a year of service with Girls Incorporated of New York City as a member of AmeriCorps. I was part of a three-person team that helped create and manage an official volunteer program, putting in place systems to recruit, train and place volunteers in Girls Inc of NYC programs. In this role, I helped provide a middle school after-school program with additional adult support for activities and homework tutoring. It was amazing to see how many people were drawn to Girls Inc's mission, and who were not only willing but eager to give their time to the girls.
I am honored to have been a part of such a positive, inspiring organization, working among people who dedicate their lives to female empowerment. Though I was not always intimately involved with direct service, I certainly was able to see what a positive impact the programs had on the girls. It was powerful to see young women who found new interests, new ways to express themselves, and built confidence in themselves.

Every member of this organization - the girls, full-time staff, part-time staff, volunteers, supporters - truly showed me what it means to be a "strong, smart and bold" woman. It is evident that every person who is exposed to Girls Inc of NYC programs leaves feeling more empowered and confident. I know this holds true not only for the girls, but for the volunteers I worked with and certainly myself. I will forever be stronger for the experiences I had and things I learned at Girls Inc of NYC.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
The only change I would make to this organization is to somehow help it expand to include even more programming throughout the five boroughs, because the need for and benefits of Girls Inc programs are clear.

Girls, Inc. is a wonderful organization that gives underserved girls the opportunity to express themselves and to learn of the inner strength that they possess. The girls are enthusiastic and participate in every aspect of the curriculum. The mentoring sessions serve as a safe environment where the girls can ask questions about anything and vent frustration regarding family and friends without fear of judgment. I am proud to be part of this organization and to help young girls realize their potential to be "strong, smart and bold."

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?
All the volunteers need to show up on time. Tardiness can be forgiven with the students because they do not fully control their schedule, but it is inexcusable for the mentors to be late.
Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)
I was reminded that a child may have the potential to become a great member of society, but that potential is only realized when she has the support of her family. It upsets me to know that so much of the raw talent in these young girls will be wasted because they were not encouraged by the people around them.

Girls Inc of New York City is the type of organization that makes you smile knowing you're goig there; light up while there; and leave happy that you got to be apart of something so phenomenal.
I've had the sincere honor of volunteering with Girls Inc NYC for a few years now and I am so happy that I get to go back everytime. The staff is both smart and committed to the work. They work to ensure that not only are the girls strong, smart, and bold...but everyone that is involved is as well.

Allow them the capacity to have a bigger budget and serve more girls as apart of their programs
I have had the pleasure of being involved with Girls Inc of NYC for over a year now, and keep being surprised time and time again by the thoughtfulness, creativity and relevance of the programs. The staff, volunteers, educators and the girls themselves all strive to bring to life educational programs that bridge the gap between school and life, and contribute to empowering hundreds of participants each year. Girls learn how to manage a stock portfolio, how to assemble components of a computer, and dozens of other equally useful and unexpected skills, through it all developing their own confidence and believing they can be whoever they want to be. One of the goals of the programs is to accompany the girls on their way to college, but that's really only one step in a lifelong journey.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
1. Travel back in time and have Girls Inc exist when I was growing up... 2. Make sure it gets even more support to help further its mission to inspire young girls to be "strong, smart and bold"!
Girls Inc. of NYC is a great organization that empowers underserved girls to be "strong, smart and bold". Almost 100% of GINYC girls graduate high school and go on to college -- that's quite a feat in NYC where about half of our kids graduate high school. Girls Inc. of NYC makes the future of New York City look brighter -- these girls will come back home from college and be movers and shakers in their communities, giving back and making life better for everybody. Girls Inc. is a great cause indeed.
Girls Inc. of NYC makes New York City better, girl by girl by girl.

I volunteered with Girls Inc. last september and went every wednesday afternoon for the scholl year to work in Project Grow - an after-school program which is run by Girls Inc. I think Girls Inc. do a great job or providing an interesting and helpful program for young urban girls. They can take art, dance, photogaphy etc. classes and also get a good environment for them to do their homework and get help if they need it. I really enjoyed volunteering with them because the young girls are great and the tutors who ran the programs were all good with the girls so I learned a lot on how to relate to and handle girls of that age group. Also I did feel my volunteering was useful because as the girls got used to seeing me regularly, they would ask for help with their homework and projects and it's a pleasure to see them understand something better after I explain it to them. Some weeks I was sent to help a different group also, which I thought was good too as sometimes volunteer organisations can actually have too many volunteers but I felt that Project Grow is well run enough that they will send the volunteer to help where they are needed the most.

The girls in the program are encouraged by the Project Grow tutors to focus on their work and I see girls responding to that. Also I have seen the girls learn new skills like dancing and creating video stories which helps their self-esteem.

As a Girls Incorporated volunteer, I have had a very enjoyable experience working with students as well as with staff. Through helping the girls with test prep and homework, I've seen them show such enthusiasm and excitement for projects they're involved in, books they're reading for class or pleasure, and in other areas of their learning. When I inquire about their projects or current books, the girls respond with zeal, thoroughly explaining everything they've learned. This excitement for learning is a quality I wish I had in middle school and high school, so at times I am truly in awe of these amazing girls. This positivity I see the girls display when involved in school work is proof to me that Girls Incorporated is doing a wonderful job in providing meaningful and effective education, establishing trusting relationships, and encouraging the rejection of gender restrictions; the number of girls who have told me they like math and science is proof alone! I have had an awesome experience with Girls Incorporated – keep up the great work!
