German Shepherd Safe Haven, Inc. is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Public Charity dedicated to finding loving forever homes for abandoned German Shepherds. Our main goal is to rescue, train, rehabilitate, and re-home German Shepherds from shelter environments and from owner surrenders. Our secondary goal is to provide education to the public on the temperament, personality, and life span of the breed, as well as the importance for owners to spay and neuter their dogs. We believe that matching each dog’s temperament and personality to a family’s needs is fundamental to creating life-long relationships where the dog is not just a dog, but a valued member of the family.

It's been a year since we adopted our shepherd from German Shepherd Safe Haven. First we fostered then we adopted. Our experience with GSSH was amazing. They are supportive through the whole process. The placement of Becca (now McKenna) in our home was done with consideration to our family unit and lifestyle. This rescue is in it for the dogs and that makes all the difference to me.

German Shepherd Safe Haven stands head and shoulders above other rescue organizations. The priority is the dogs. So much time and attention is spent on really understanding the dogs in their care so that a successful placement can be made. When a family adopts a dog, they become a part of the German Shepherd Safe Haven family. Families are supported well after the adoption is completed. There is a true love of the animals and their well being even when the dogs have been placed.

I adopted a dog from German Shepherd Safe Haven two years ago. Tom has been an extremely valuable resource to me and my dog. I have telephoned him day and night to discuss training issues, nutrition, behavior and poop! He always returns phone calls. He frequently offers to drop everything to help out. He gets to know each dog individually and cares deeply about all of them. If he has a concern about the safety of a handler, dog or the public, he follows up to ensure everything is on the right track. Perhaps the poster below confused "dedication" with "interference." If you are looking to be a FOREVER OWNER and commit to your dog through the good times and the bad, you will not find a more honest, loyal supporter than Tom Williamson at GSSH.

I'm fairly familiar with German shepherd rescues, both locally and in the Southeast, where I've adopted dogs. I like to think of Safe Haven as a boutique rescue because Tom and Jen keep the dogs either in their homes or in fosters. The dogs never languish in a kennel atmosphere. To me, that makes them immediately available to acclimate to a new home without some of the issues that could arise from being boarded or kept in a kennel.
After we lost our adored GSD, Dexter, at barely five years old to cancer, we knew it wouldn't be long before we had to give our other dog, Luke, another playmate and, really, the house was simply too boring with only one mature, low-energy dog. We needed a playmate, too, since Dexter kept us amused pretty much around the clock.
We had signed up with a much larger rescue in SoCal, and while there was nothing wrong with it, we didn't get the personal attention we received from Tom. And because we already had Luke, they wanted us to add a female, but we didn't want to limit ourselves when we were happy with two males. They were pretty insistent. And, let's face it, adding a dog is really adding to the family, so it's important to get it right. Well, we hit pay dirt with German Shepherd Safe Haven, Tom and Roman (now Jax). Tom is wonderfully hands on, and doesn't disappear once the adoption is completed. Also, the organization offers the most wonderful annual event in its picnic where dogs, volunteers and adopted parents get to mingle and enjoy a day filled with food, games and happy German shepherds.
After an extended interview, Tom knew what we needed, and matched us up with the ideal dog. The only one we saw. But, until the paperwork was done, and Jax was in our home for just a few hours, none of us dreamed that something magical and nearly impossible to believe had transpired.
It's fairly rare that a rescue dog is accompanied by a pedigree. Jax had one, and Tom asked if I wanted it included in his paperwork. I did want to see it because I was interested in doing a little research, and seeing Jax's family. That's when the magic happened.
You see, we got Dexter in the Atlanta area when we lived there. He came from a small kennel in Germany that raised German showlines. On our first evening with Jax, I decided to take a look at his pedigree and was absolutely floored to find that Jax and Dexter were related, and fairly closely. I checked Dexter's papers and verified that Jax's grandmother and Dexter's grandfather were littermates from that small kennel in Germany. What are the odds? We still find it nearly unbelievable. We're beyond thrilled to have Jax because he's ridiculously silly and loving. And, on another level, we still have a piece of Dexter. Truthfully, even without the Dexter connection, Jax is the ideal family member. We're so grateful to Safe Haven, and when the time comes for another GSD, we'll gladly look there first.

There are six rescues in southern California specializing in german shepherds. This is why you should choose German Shepherd Safe Haven - their one and only concern is for the dog. That means that Tom and Jen personally know each dog, its needs and quirks, and even behavior issues. They always look for the best home for their dogs and do not place a dog in a home unless they are confident it is right for the dog. While there can never be a guarantee with a rescue dog, if you are lucky enough to become part of the Safe Haven family, you won't regret it.

On a personal note, thank you again, Tom and Jen, for allowing Toby to become part of our family.

After volunteering for and adopting from several rescue organizations over the past ten years, I have been so impressed by the way Tom and Jen run GS Safe Haven. They really take the time to get to know their dogs before making them available for adoption - for a potential adopter, this is a DREAM! They take the time during the adoption process to make sure that the right dog is going to the right family. We adopted Frasier from GS Safe Haven last summer and he is one of the best dogs we have ever had the privilege to know (and love). Not only are Tom and Jen with you every step of the way through the adoption process, they consider you part of their family afterward - everything from advice to training to babysitting. If you are looking to add a german shepherd to your family, go to GS Safe Haven - you won't be sorry.

I adopted from this rescue and it was the best choice I could have ever made. They put the time and effort into every adoption to try their best to assure their rescues get adopted into a forever home. They also put time into training each dog before it gets adopted out and makes sure they are healthy. Worth every cent ...

Almost a year ago, we were looking for a new addition to our home. We both had never owned a Shepherd before and loved what we had heard. A friend of ours recommended German Shepherd Safe Haven for all the reasons we were looking for a new family member. We spoke with Tom, who was courteous, compassionate and more than informative about any and all questions we had. What I thought was extraordinary about GSSH, is the amount of time Tom and his crew put forth to make our experience a memorable life long choice for us.

Tom and his crew truly believe in finding a forever home for his dogs. He was very clear that personalities are most important when looking for that perfect match for the family. I can 100% say without any reservation, we are one of the happiest families with our addition of our German Shepherd. Zeke (formally knowns as Luke) has brought so much joy to our family. Tom and the crew at GSSH work with each dog and ensure they are ready for adoption, and meet the highest standards of temperament when dealing with this breed.

One thing that will continuously bring us back to this organization is the family they create. Daily and weekly news feeds on his dogs. Events several times a year to keep the organization informed and feeling like that family is key with this group. I have heard others stories from other breeders or organizations, which they feel like they are being presurred or force fed a dog. This organization is the exact opposite. They make sure you feel like you are family and their #1 priority is placing that wonderful Shepherd to the perfect forever home. We are 100% satisfied and love Zeke more that anything. If you are looking to adopt a wonderful addition to you family, look no further, this is the group for you.

German Shepherd Safe Haven is the greatest organization. I highly recommend them to everyone who wants to adopt wonderful, loyal dogs. When I lost my last German Shepherd, I decided to get a rescue dog. I talked to other rescue organizations but I didn't feel comfortable. One day searching Internet, I found this beautiful girl. When I read the story about her, as well as the history and the mission of GSSH, I knew I found my perfect dog and a wonderful organization. Tom, Jen and their team are incredibly dedicated to their dogs. They take ample time with potential families to make sure every dog will fit perfectly.... And trust me.... They will! They also encourage fostering before adopting. Wonderful organization with so many happy dogs. I can't say enough positive things about them!!!

I cannot say enough good things about this organization. Tom rescued our dog (Zeke) after being told they were going to put him down for being "too aggressive." Zeke was barely one year old at the time. He had been abandoned and was scared. Tom worked with Zeke and was able to train him to be house broken, and very well behaved. We have had Zeke for almost a year now and every single day we talk about how lucky we are to have him. Tom is a great trainer and even more so, he loves every one of these dogs. Tom makes himself available at any time for questions or advice about the dogs, and keeps us in the "family" even after our adoption of Zeke was finalized. Tom will not just give any dog to any person, he will screen each one carefully to ensure they are a proper fit for each other. I am amazed at how he is able to do so much but so grateful he does. All his dogs have unique personalities and it is so easy to fall in love with them. It has been a privilege to work with this organization and continue the relationship even afterward.

We lost our white shepherd of 13 1/2 years and thought we could never replace her. Our daughter found gssh on line and saw a photo of two dogs she thought we would like. When I contacted Tom and asked about the first dog of choice, he talked to me for a while and then said, this dog is not for you, but the 2nd dog seems more of a fit. Two weeks later, after a meeting, a home visit & another conversation, Wynter was ours.
She is the most wonderful dog, we have had her for 10 weeks now, but the first two were not without a couple of adjustment problems regards territory & adjusting to my husband. Tom was always there are the end of the phone line to help & advise. He came to the house once, with her two foster moms then he came to the park twice to observe her. The problems were easily remedied, with Tom's knowledgeable & professional help and we have a pet who we adore & she loves us & is a wonderful companion.
Tom certainly knew what he was doing when he said Wynter was the one for us and his follow through to make sure that we were all happy (dog included) was wonderful

I am so impressed with how GSSH cares for thier dogs, they have clearly made it their priority to always do what is best for the dogs. GSSH takes their time to make sure the dogs get the right vet care, love, training the proper food etc. Its never about numbers or just getting the dog a home, its about taking the time and making sure all of the dogs under their care has everything he or she needs to live a healthy , happy life in an amazing forever home! It makes me happy to see they are saving so many dogs from these nasty kill shelters , and giving them a new life!!!!!
