I coach my son's U12 soccer team and this fall season we matched up with a Team we only knew from the posted schedule as the Fugees. As we took the field for our first of two scheduled games, we noticed this was no ordinary team. They we very skilled for sure, but this is not what set them apart from other teams on our schedule. They spoke in several different languages and it quickly became clear that our opponent's players on that day came from all over the globe. We played an incredible game with them and finished in a 3-3 tie.
My team was thrilled at this come back tie, but even more excited to talk about the makeup of our opponent. You see, we learned during that game that "Fugees" was short for Refugees. All of my players found wonder in the fact that they had just played against a team that consisted entirely of child survivors of war from across the globe.
This day began a movement and commitment amongst our team to support the Fugees in any way possible. We learned of the school that has been established to teach these children in ways our public school system could not. Each and every one of my players viewed the Tom Brokaw segment aired last Thanksgiving (see it here⦠its worth the few minutes, I promise! : http://vimeo.com/18430190). We learned about the incredible work Coach Luma is doing just a few short miles away from us.
