FRISKYS is a federally licensed wildlife rehab center, successfully run for over 40 years by Colleen and scoares of volunteers. When I was new here in town, I bought stuff at their major fund=raiser, a yard sale, then signed up for a tour of the facility. Then, when they were sued by a new neighbor who allowed her fears of monkeys get the best of her, I went to the county courthouse and heard the judges say basically, the monkeys were there FAR before you decided to move into the neighborhood, so.... they threw out the nuisance suit. In the meantime, thousands of injured birds, squirrels, fawns, etc have been helped through the generousity of donors and other neighbors. It is important to note that this is not a farm, or a zoo. Strict rules protect the wildlife in Friskys, and Colleen has given over her entire life to help rehabilitate them.

I have visited Frisky's on 2 occasions. Once when I found an injured baby squirrel and once when I saved baby bunnies from a neighbor's cat. I got advice over the telephone on how to care for each animal until I could get them to Frisky's. When I arrived at Frisky's each time I was welcomed with open arms. I was able to call Frisky's a few days after I dropped off the animals to find out how they were progressing. What a wonderful establishment.

I have volunteered with Frisky's a number of times and find it to be an amazing, and sometimes, heart wrenching experience. Colleen, with the help of as many volunteers as she can get, care for many non-human primates and other wild animals that people have had as pets. After a time, people realize that wild animals are not pets, and they end up at Frisky's, where they are cared for and loved by all. There are very few places that are equipped to handle the animals that Frisky's has. The knowledge and commitment is just incredible. They also do wildlife rehabilitation on top of it all. So, there is a permanent population, and then there are ones lucky enough to be native and are rehabilitated and released. Running this organization requires volunteers and donations. It is non-profit and totally dependent on kind hearted individuals.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Some of the amazing results I have personally experienced while volunteeering was watching a bald eagle, who had been shot, get comfortable with an enclosure built just for him and watch him heal. Seeing baby squirrels come in near death and then start nursing and growing. Seeing numerous animals heal and be released. Watch diabetic monkeys get the extra care and TLC needed to help them live. Really, too many other things to list.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

If I had the power to make changes, it would be through much more funding and increased acreage for larger enclosures.

This place is run very safely and efficiantly. Colleen has run Friskys for decades and has had no problems. They have been under alot of scrutiney for a long time now. I have been to these hearings, they are a waste of time and money; and are pathetic! They have been harrassing Friskys for a long time but it never stops Colleen! She is rock solid. She is a pro at what she does. I have never met a more knowledgable person in this area. If we did not have this place, I don't know what we would do. She only selects the best people to be a part of this blessed place.
Please help them in anyway you can!!!!!! I as well as many others do and are proud of it!!!!!!

I've felt at peace whenever I've been there. I believe the animals are very content and happy there. Colleen is loving but tough. This is a beautiful blessed place. (Therefore called a sanctuary). If I were an animal in need of help, I would hope someone would take me there. Suzanne Zbignewich

I adopted my chinchilla from Frisky's and I couldn't feel more appreciative of their sanctuary. They were very knowledgable of the animals they had in their care. It is very obvious how passionate they are about caring for animals and I wish that they had more support. The staff at Frisky's put so much time and hardwork in making sure that all their animals are taken care of. When adopting, Frisky's takes high measures to make sure that the animals are going to a compatible, forever home. Whenever I find or hear about a hurt or abandoned animal, I know to send them to Frisky's. For such an amazing place, they sure don't get the acknowledment that they deserve.

The only change I would want for Frisky's is enough support for them to expand their facility. They deserve it!

Frisky's provides a much needed service to not only the community, but the entire region. They don't turn away difficult cases, or animals that other shelters would. They have taken in rabbits seized in a hoarding case, and eagles that have been shot or have unknown neurological problems. And all at their own expense, because they don't know what donations will be given to them. They are licensed and meet all zoning laws and regulations. I am glad they are located around the corner from me, and my faith in the world is greater for them being in it.

This was the one organization in Maryland willing to help a baby fawn that had been hit by a vehicle, everyone else only would euthanize.

I work in downtown Baltimore and found a very stressed and injured bird whose leg was broken. After successfully catching the bird, I found Frisky's website and called to see if they could help. Colleen told me she would be happy to help this bird. I drove the animal to her and immediately she took him from the box, looked him over and knew exactly what she could do to fix him. She was wonderful and her willingness to help at a moments notice was awesome!

Thank you for this opportunity to express my admiration of, and respect for, for the operations of Frisky’s Wildlife and
Primate Sanctuary, Inc., located at 10790 Old Frederick, Rd., Woodstock, MD 21163.

For the past 20 years or so, I have interacted with Colleen Layton and the
Sanctuary she manages. Countless times over many years she has proven to be an inexhaustible and impeccable resource both for receiving ailing--or otherwise at-risk--wildlife I have brought to the Sanctuary, as well as providing telephone advice on preparations I needed to make in order to transport animals to her for care.

When my schedule permits me to visit the Sanctuary, I am continually
impressed with the level of care, sanitation and safety Colleen maintains—vital to successfully rehabilitating wildlife, to which Colleen has dedicated her entire life.

Every visit reveals Colleen living her life’s dream in selflessly providing a safe and clean environment and healing opportunities wildlife in need would otherwise not have. Colleen is the voice for those whose habitats have been so devastatingly compromised by us humans.

I have been given the opportunity and privilege to release non-primate animals back into the wild after they have been successfully been treated/rehabilitated at Frisky's Wildlife & Primate Sanctuary.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

The only changes I would make to this organization would be to enlarge it, in order that it may serve a greater population of injured/orphaned/displaced animals.

I work as a volunteer on the weekends in various areas of Frisky's doing a number of different jobs, and I must say, that out of every place that I have volunteered, Friskys really is by far the best! The reason this place is so amazing is because everyone on the staff shares a vision to give the best possible sanctuary for the animals of all sizes. Also on top of that, the wealth of knowledge is far more paramount here than at many different other animal organizations.

I also have to say that without a doubt, Colleen is by far one of the sweetest, most knowlegable, and caring person that I have ever known. I really hope that if I had the choice to come back in another life that I would be an animal at Frisky's because they would be able to give me the best care possible.

I would get everyone to come together and give this organization the most support that they need for years to come.
