The Friends of Saguaro National Park facilitates research, conservation, and education at Saguaro National Park in Tucson, Arizona.

I am continually impressed with the commitment of the board of directors and the executive director, Bob Newtson. He finds ways to get things done, bring in funding during tight economic times, and recruit outstanding volunteers and participants to FOSNP and Saguaro National Park programs.

Without FOSNP, the functioning of Saguaro National Park would be very much impaired, much to the detriment of the ecosystem, its inhabitants, and its human visitors.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Its support of biological research at Saguaro National Park.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Link it to an established 'green' endowment.

The Saguaro is the iconic symbol of the southwest but it is also the living friend of the sonoran desert. This amazing cactus is worthy of our best efforts to protect and preserve our natural environment. The Friends of Saguaro NP have struggled with raising money to meet the research and education needed for the park. A 'higher' profile in our community may impinge on other environmental organizations but the more focused goals of FOSNP and very low % spent on maintainining the organization itself makes Friends a superior choise for support and recognition.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase the community awareness through TV and radio advertising while maintaining fiscal restraint.

The Friends have many special programs -- research on the Gila Monster, writing grants for building trails and eradicating buffelgrass in the park, and many more. One of my favorites is the Adopt a Saguaro program, which allows contributors to
