People need to insure they have their facts before they are critical. It is an old post but needs to be addressed. There are TWO Friends of Homeless Animals. Joette Bailey & Sharon Loudenslager are obviosly talking about the one in Virginia. The one posted HERE is in Rhode Island. We do not have any Virginia fosters.....and would not have turned someone down due to their geographical area. If the person meets our adoption standards and requirements, we adopt the dog. We never say based solely on location.

I do not understand this group. We called to inquire about a dog, Traxx, being fostered by FOHA in Aldie, VA. We were told that we are not within their metro area. We live 10 miles west of their cutoff. The person imparting the information was rude and short in her response. The next day I emailed them offering to pay their gas to do a home check, since we are only 10 miles west of their cutoff and we really wanted the dog. I heard nothing back, but my partner got an email saying the fosterer was adopting the dog. We believe that they simply wanted to get rid of us. It is no wonder so many homeless dogs and cats never get homes. Rescue groups have inflexible rules, and this group was just one that falls in that category. It has always been my understanding that fosterers do not keep the dog or if fosterer may wish to keep the dog, the dog is not put on the "adoptable" list. Having just lost our beloved beagle mix, once again we were put through a grieving via this rejection. I used to donate to this organization, but no more, EVER. one night, my husband and I were sitting around, watching tv, and I was checking my email. I was on several rescue email lists, as we had been considering adopting a dog for quite some time. I opened an email and there was a picture of the most beautiful puppy I'd ever seen. She was one of a four puppy litter from Illinois looking for new homes. Exactly 8 days later, we drove to New Hampshire and picked up "Bunny" -- promptly renamed Zoe. She is an absolutely perfect dog. Now 3 years old, she has an amazing temperament, loves to snuggle, and is still just as beautiful. We feel so lucky to have found her and cannot thank FOHA enough for bringing her into our lives.

Around the hoildays my family and I were looking for a new dog. My husband wanted a Boston terrier. We looked online and found this great group. They had two litters of puppies . We filled out an app and heard that a puppy was ours. We were so happy. Then we heard there was a mix up and our puppy was already promised to someone else. They made it right and got us a puppy for the other litter. She was just what my husband wanted. She has the markings of a boston but looks like a chihuahua. We love her and she is a great fit in our family. I thank Cathie McGiness for fighting to make sure we got her. Everyone we dealt with was great and would adopt from them again. Holly aka pixie has come a long way. She is now 18lbs and loves to play with her doggy brother Chance who is a Boxer . She also enjoys her kids. Thank you so much for helping grow our family.

When I lost my senior do at 16yrs old, I thought I never would find another dog. The pain is so great.
When I found Friends of Homeless Animals, I knew I would be hooked. I had always wanted to have a Boston Terrier and I found mine by the name of Pumba.
Pumba was a failed adoption,
they brought him back saying he had seizures. Ever since I've had Pumba, he's never had a seizure. He is such a loving and nurturing dog.
Friends of Homeless Animals made it so simple to go through the adoption process. They not only handled the adoption but also offered support after the adoption.
I've made some great friends and hope to adopt again!

When our beloved boston terrier passed away we wanted to do something good in her memory and decided to adopt a rescue boston. We saw a picture of a mid age adult that had been in foster care for quite a while. We were attracted to her so we read her bio and wondered why no one had adopted her. Knowing that we definately wanted to adopt a dog and if this one turned out not to be suitable to our needs and home situation FOHA would work with us to find another we took the chance and sent in our application and deposit. It was definately the best thing we did. I found the organization to be well run, genuinely caring in their mission and extremely honest. They disclosed everything they knew and observed with regard to the dog's health, habits and temperment. There is no profit motive here like in a pet store. These people just want to place the right dog in the right home. They are all volunteers and give so much of themselves. All of the adoption fees and donations go right back into the organization for veterinary and other animal expenses. To make a long story short we got the perfect dog for us and couldn't be happier.

I adopted my first Boston terrier 10 years ago through FOHA, and when it came time for me to contribute my own resources to a rescue organization, I did not hesitate to contact FOHA. This is an organization of truly caring individuals, where the animals come first. I have fostered two dogs and helped transport one, I have also conducted home visits, and I have had nothing but excellent experiences. A truly worthy organization.

I am both a volunteer and a client. I have fostered several dogs for this organization. Any and all concerns I had were handled in a prompt and professional manner. Our leaders put in countless hours of work to ensure all dogs get vetting before they're placed in foster homes. Adopters are screened, via home visits and reference checks.

I adopted a senior terrier mix from FOHA. Scruffy gave us three wonderful years. He was a loyal, loving dog from the moment he entered our home and jumped up on the recliner. We were soulmates.

Animal rescue is a heartwrenching, often thankless venture. This rescue rises seamlessly to ever an changing climate and maintains its focus on those it serves; the animals.

I would not hesitate to recommend changing your life, and the life of an animal, through adoption and/or support of FOHA.

I am both a client served and a volunteer. I joined foha because I wanted to find a playmate for my own dog, Molly. We started fostering to find her friend and to help other dogs in the process. It seemed like a win-win for all. We ended up adopting a 6year old Boston Terrier, Quince. They love each other. It was a wonderful experience for us. In turn, we have adopted out another loving Boston form someone who had to give him up to another couple who had just lost one of theirs. I am currently fostering Penny, an 11yo Boston and Benji a 1yo Chi-Hound. This is a wonderful group that I am lucky enough to respresent. Everyone is helpful, knowledgable, and willing to give their all for each and every one of these dogs. It is very rare that a dog will ever be turned away. Most are saved at death's door and then welcomed into the arms of love at their forever homes. There is truly no better feeling.

I have been a volunteer with FOHA for a little over 3 years now. I have fostered various dogs and adopted two, all of which would have been euthanized otherwise. FOHA is a wonderful rescue, founded by our fearless leader Roie, who is an incredible woman that works 24/7 for her dogs. The circle of volunteers she has built over the years, always put the animals first and work together as a whole for the good of these dogs!! When I look at the many lives we have saved and are in loving homes, since I've been volunteering, it is a wonderful feeling of accomplishment!! We are always looking for new foster homes and volunteers to continue building this rescue to the incredible size it has reached. Join, become a volunteer, foster a dog in need, it is one of lifes most rewarding experiences. I can guarantee I have learned so many things from caring for these dogs. One of lifes many priceless pleasures has been fostering and volunteering time for this rescue!!

The only thing I would do different is find a volunteer that concentrated on advertising and recruiting new foster homes only. We always seem to have a shortage of homes and it causes some pain and anguish knowing the dogs we cannot pull and put into foster homes will be euthanized.
