Only 8% of YOUR donation actually goes to a VET!! 8 cents of every dollar you donate. The bulk goes to for profit companies. I received a call soliciting a donation for this organization. After listening to their pitch I agreed to send a donation after I reviewed their Form 990. For 2009 they reported $5.9 Million in grants & contributions (pg 1line 8). They spent $3.2 Million on fundraising to ONE firm (pg 8 section B 1A). That's 54% of their total donations. They spent another $1.7 Million on collectors and billers. OUT OF ALL THAT CASH THEY BROUGHT IN ONLY $500,000 (1/2 a million) WAS ACTUALLY SPENT ON VETS!!!! That's 8% if you are keeping track. Make your own decision; but these guys are NOT getting my support.

http://www.military-money-matters.com/foundation-for-american-veterans.html is a good website to check out The Foundation for American Veterans. I just got a call moments ago solicting for care packages to be sent to the troops in Iraq. There is nothing on their website indicating this project is underway. I said I would donate ONLY if they checked out on-line and they do not check out. The Foundation for American Veterans does not publish financial information on its web site. The Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance reports that the organization failed to provide the requested information, so BBB cannot determine whether it meets their 20 standards for charity accountability. According to a Charity Navigator report in 2005, the Foundation for American Veterans used just 6 cents of every dollar raised for services for veterans.

I am married to a Vietnam vet so when I received their (unsolicited) call asking for a donation I agreed to receiving a mailed request. Having done so, I looked at their 2008 990 and see that of $4.9 million raised they spent $3 million on fundraising and only $1.2 on veterans. This is not an acceptable charitable practice.
