8117 W Manchester Ave Suite 500 Playa del Rey CA 90293 USA

Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death and disease. It causes over 390,000 US deaths each year. 90% of all smokers became addicted before reaching age 19. Chances are that most Americans have lost a close family member or friends because of tobacco. The initiation of smoking by young people, and the persistent conflict of interest between the health of Americans and the interests of the tobacco industry, are well-documented problems. The Foundation for a Smokefree America''s mission is to motivate youth to stay tobaccofree, and to empower smokers to quit successfully.
The goals of the Foundation are to establish in-house programs to fight tobacco use at the local, regional and national levels, to prevent youth smoking through our websites and school-based educational programs, and to help empower those suffering from tobacco addiction to quit successfully, through our websites and other educational venues, and to enact peer teaching programs, empowering youth to defend themselves against the onslaught of tobacco advertising and peer pressure.

Target demographics:

children and teens vulnerable to starting tobacco use and smokers searching for free quitting tips

Direct beneficiaries per year:

over 300,000 people, mostly in the US but internationally as well, to learn more about smoking and tobacco issues.

Geographic areas served:

the United States and internationally

Thanks in part to a major gift from Patricia Henley of $100,000 grant, we were able to make a very significant increase in time and resources devoted to our programs and outreach. As a direct result, website traffic doubled to Smokefree America's homepage. Our outreach programs included the following unprecedented results on the Internet: Google provided us with an in-kind grant of $10,000 per month in free advertising. Due to the large traffic increase generated as a result, especially by the search terms 'quit smoking' and 'stop smoking,' Google has renewed their grant annually since it was first awarded in 2005.

This is my favorite anti-smoking group of all. I was able to dedicate a donation I made at their website to the memory of my best friend's husband, who passed away because of smoking -- and they let my friend know I made a gift in his memory in a nice letter.

This non-profit has also long been active educating the public about smoking bans, FDA regulation of tobacco, the health benefits of tobacco tax hikes and other tobacco policy. Their acclaimed educational video, The Truth About Tobacco, is now in over 10,000 middle and high schools, and their quitting tips helped another good friend of mine to stop smoking. I have great praise for The Foundation for a Smokefree America. This is where my donations are going to go every year, and I hope the reader will join me in giving, too.

Thank you!

My husband and I have looked into groups against smoking, and we can say with some authority the Foundation for a Smokefree America is one of the best groups in the US fighting tobacco. Their programs keep youth from getting addicted, and empower thousands of smokers to quit successfully. They have a tremendous web presence thanks in part to a major in-kind grant of $40,000 per month in free advertising on Google.

Because of this they have a great platform to educate the public about numerous tobacco issues; they are best known for their national campaign for teen smoking prevention. Every major search engine ranks Smokefree America among its top three results for "anti-smoking", "anti-tobacco" and related search phrases.

Executive Director Patrick Reynolds apprears regularly on Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, Al Jazeera and other networks, whenever tobacco stories are on the wires. We found a url at the group's site with his news coverage -- Mr. Reynolds is a frequent speaker to community groups, universities and middle and high schools in the US; they are now focusing on a new international campaign.

This group also offers an acclaimed educational video, "The Truth About Tobacco, 2011 Edition," now in over 10,000 schools, health departments and libraries. We watched some clips from it at

The org is a tax-exempt, public 501c3 foundation, and my husband and I will continue to give all we can to support their programs and mission. We know this group, and they are really making a difference in this fight.

We are hoping to spearhead Smokefree America's endowment and capital campaign, and we hope you will join us.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I saw Patrick Reynolds speak at a university near here a few years ago, and his talk motivated me to become more involved in this fight. My mother died from smoking when I was 25, and I have always cared about the problem of tobacco use.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I'd like this group to devote greater resources to their capital campaign to raise an endowment. This will empower them to focus on this good work in the decades to come.

This organization's work affects not only the future, in preventing kids from starting to smoke, but also the present in helping people quit the cigarette habit. The Foundation for a Smokefree America doesn't just help the teens in this country, but it also has an impact worldwide, which is important as our country becomes more globally oriented.

I have donated to this organization in the past and wholeheartedly believe in their effective programs and how they allocate their donations to provide the most impact for the money.

Patrick Reynolds is a charismatic and engaging speaker that can easily reach kids of all ages with his healthy message.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing children have "ah-ha" moments, and also seeing them be motivated to help the adults in their family quit as well.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

None. They are a model organization, in my mind.
