Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Our mission is to end the cruelty of pet overpopulation by rescuing abandoned cats and kittens and sterilizing the feral and stray cat population in the community.

Results: TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) for Community (Feral) Cats TNR is one of For the Love of Cat’s key directives. The community issues of cat overpopulation cannot be achieved through the adoption process. It must be accomplished through sterilization of the existing community cat population. In addition to sterilizing, the cats are vaccinated and under the daily feeding and care of volunteer caregivers. For the Love of Cats works with Domestic Animal Services in Collier County to adhere to the TNR ordinance currently in place. To date, For the Love of Cats has TNR’d over 5000 cats. Caregivers feed over 300 cats on Marco Island every day. Rescue of Abandoned House Cats and Kittens Abandoned pets are a major contributing factor to the increase in community cats throughout Collier County. For the Love of Cats has rescued almost 300 abandoned house cats in the immediate area over the last 4 years. Kittens are a by-product of the community cat colonies. Rescued early, they can be domesticated and adopted into loving homes. We have rescued and adopted over 3000 kittens since 2002 and continue to rescue kittens that are the offspring of abandoned house cats in our community (we rescue the mom cat as well). We no longer have kittens from the community cat colonies because we have fixed and vaccinated all of the free roaming unadoptable cats in the community to our knowledge. Spay/Neuter for Cats of Low Income Families Our Low Income Spay/Neuter program pays for sterilization surgery for cats and kittens owned by families that would otherwise abandon them without this service. Our program is designed to help families keep their pets with the benefit of reducing abandonment and thereby also reducing the number of cats and kittens that add to the existing community cat population. Every year, we help over 75 cats and kittens to keep their home. Emergency Veterinary Services for Low Income Families Many low income families have pets that need urgent veterinary attention and would be forced to allow their pet to suffer or be euthanized without this program. Last year alone, we paid for 3 dental extractions, 3 knee surgeries, 2 cats with severe whole body infections, 1 cancerous eye removal, 1 crushed tail surgery and 2 broken leg surgeries. Each of these emergencies was over $1000 each. Seniors for Seniors Adoption Program Older cats languish in shelters for years and most do not get adopted or worse, they are euthanized to make room for younger animals. Senior citizens are often living alone and depression is a major concern. This program includes cats from all rescue groups in Collier county. Cats over 5 years old may be adopted by a senior citizen over the age of 55 at no cost to the adopter. The adoption fee along with a complete care kit for the cat is provided by For the Love of Cats. This program has been a very successful one with over 100 senior cats adopted since 2010.

Target demographics: rescue abandoned cats and kittens and help low income families to keep their pets.

Direct beneficiaries per year: save the lives of over 250 cats and kittens and helped over 60 families to keep their pets.

Geographic areas served: Marco Island, Isles of Capri, Goodland and the surrounding rural areas

Programs: -TNR (trap, neuter, return) for feral cats Rescue and adoption of abandoned cats and kittens -Spay/neuter of cats owned by families in need -Help 'em Keep 'em program pays for wellness and emergency care for cats of low income families -Seniors for Seniors program that pays the adoption fee and provides a complete care kit of food and supplies for cats over 5 years old adopted to seniors over 55 throughout Collier county

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, lived this remarkable couple named Jan and Jim Rich. Together they transformed a portion of the beautiful home into a magical place where abandoned, sick and forgotten cats and kittens were rescued and loved. There was a vetenerian wizard named Doctor Latayah who made the sick and hurting ones well. There were volunteers who spent countless hours nurturing and socializing the cats and kittens so they would be eligible for adoption into forever homes. Every life was sacred and no cat or kitten in the community was left behind. This story has a happy ending because this fairy tale place actually exists and is called "For the Love of Cats" located in Marco Island, Florida.
I am proud and very blessed to be one of the many volunteers associated with this awe inspiring organization. If there was a ten star rating, I would award it. Since five is the maximum, I reluctantly settle for five.

It takes a village to rescue a cat & find a loving home for them. That is what the For the Love
of cat in Marco Island does so well. It takes a village of dedicated volunteers to give of their
time and share their caring hearts and give voice to the beautiful cats looking for loving homes. In return, these beautiful beings share their inner souls & wisdom with their human
companions.

I have been an active volunteer @ For The Love of Cats for over 11 years & I can attest that they have been doing a very important service to the community by rescuing abandoned cats & kittens in our area, many of whom need extensive medical care before we can find them forever homes. They have controlled the "feral" population on Marco Island. They have the best volunteers who all go out of their way to help the kittens become socialized so that they can be adopted & enrich the lives of so many. It is truly a wonderful organization !

I have volunteered @ For the Love of Cats in Marco island FL for over ten years. I can tell you that this organization is one of the best I have ever been involved with. Each cat or kitten who comes in is given the absolute best care that is possible & is loved & nurtured until we find them "forever homes". In the past few years we have rescued & saved the lives of so many abandoned & abused kittens...many of whom would not be alive today without our help. The shelter is spotlessly clean, well organized, & staffed by a wonderful group of volunteers. Jan & Jim, the founders of the organization, have dedicated their lives to saving these sweet innocent creatures.

It all started with looking to adopt a kitten. I filled out the application, looked at the available kittens online and visited the For the Love of Cats shelter. The set-up is remarkable for the care of those felines that come through their door. Jim and Jan's dedication and love for what they are doing is remarkable. I was so impressed with the facility that after adopting my 2 boys from them I became a volunteer. They encourage people to call them with any questions or concerns you may have after you take your new family member home. Could not have asked for a better experience. They're the BEST!!!!

It all started for me in March 2014 when my husband gave me the ok to get a kitten. My cat Rex had passed away almost 2 years ago. I was watching the "kitty cam" and spotted Opie. He stole my heart. I filled out an adoption form and called to make a visit to the shelter. Jim couldn't have been nicer. I was amazed how clean the shelter was and the professionalism of those involved. I was able to go visit Opie and his littermates for playtime. I also picked Opie's brother Shilo to come home with me. Jan and Jim answered all my questions and concerns. Their hearts are 100% dedicated to their work with these cats and kittens. They are always so upbeat and emit such joy with each adoption that takes place. I was so impressed with For the Love of Cats that I became a volunteer 2 weeks after I brought my boys home. All the cats and kittens are so well taken care of and loved while in their care. This is such a wonderful organization. They bring so much happiness to the lives of others. Please be sure to donate and adopt from this great shelter.

I was fortunate enough to be able to work as a volunteer at For the Love of Cats for several years . The shelter has the most dedicated and passionate volunteers , owners, shelter manager, and veterinary care that any cat or kitten could hope for, caring for the " resident " kitties !
Any homeless cat or kitten who ends up with this group is blessed !
There are not enough " five star words" to say how wonderful For the Love of Cats is !

I have been a volunteer for FLC for several years . There are not enough superlatives to describe this organization. They are simply amazing people , who have made an enormous difference in the lives of so many cats, and so many people. If only there were more shelters like this, because there are far too many cats that need help!

About 3 years ago a stray cat started coming by nightly. One night she showed up with a mass in her neck. I had no idea what to do, so I called For the Love of Cats. They not only helped, they let us release her so she would continue to trust us.

On July 5, 2015, I adopted a little black kitten they rescued. When she was found, she weighed 7 ounces and her eyes were still closed. With For the Love of cats, her dtermination, and the love of her foster mom she made it!! She is now a feisty 5 month old kitten we named Maxie.

Thank you Jim & Jan!!
