One of my poems was included in Fifth Wednesday a few years ago, so I was naturally inclined to like the journal. But the placement of my poem, its companions, the poems directly before and directly after, both by different poets, were artistically related, amplifying the vision and spirit of the art. Every year I try to subscribe to a few journals and last year I subscribed to Fifth Wednesday, giving me a chance to evaluate it with less subjectivity. I was impressed by the quality of art and writing, the sense of cohesive intellect and joy, as it if were proud and happy to offer a place for writers and an opportunity for readers.

Fifth Wednesday is a wonderful journal with regional and national followings. Guest editors are always from the area, or with connections to the Midwest. Authors are from all over the country, and sometimes the world. The journal is very high quality, both in its production and the high standards held for the writing the editors include. The staff is dedicated and hard-working.

In a short amount of time, Fifth Wednesday Books has established a reputation for publishing excellence and dependable publication dates. The work chosen for publication is by some of the areas best writers. Each issue is punctuated by a reading that gleans attention for literature and represents diverse voices. In arena often filled with work of questionable, quality Fifth Wednesday Books rises above the status quo.

Fifth Wednesday Journal is one of the best literary magazines in the country, with an international reputation, and deserves to be recognized for the fine poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and photography that graces its pages in every issue. Staffed by readers and editors who largely contribute their services, myself among them, this journal creates an oasis of excellence in literature circles, and manages to feature work that is both erudite and accessible to lovers of the arts everywhere. I write this review not only as a previous volunteer, having read hundreds of submissions of very high quality, but also as a "professional member with expertise in the field," that is, as a poet who has been published on four continents and notably a past contributor to Fifth Wednesday Journal. At a time when arts budgets are being cut or even eliminated from schools, government agencies, and private sources, Fifth Wednesday could well make use of a non-profits grant to bolster all the labor and creativity that goes into this wonderful journal.
